19D : BIHARI (A N BIHARI)* = BAHRAINI
ReplyDeleteAbout : A, Name : N
Clue type : CA (Composite Anagram)
Definition : Desi
Confused is the anagrind
DeleteConstruction of the clue is a little confusing with 2 words ( this desi) between A ( about) and N ( Name)

DeleteHow to solve a composite anagram?
DeleteSome tips:
Find its weakest spot – the anagram indicator.
Follow exactly what the clue says. Advanced cryptics balance complexity with strict rules of fairness – there won't be any superfluous words or loose wordplay.
Count the letters, make sure the two sides add up to equal length.
The definition may appear in the middle of the clue. Look for definition placeholders like "this".
Composite anagrams are often of &lit type – check if it works to read the whole clue as the definition.
Practise!

DeleteThank you MB!
DeleteLast but not the least- Practice makes perfect.
Delete"Baharini confused this about Desi name."
DeleteHow does this sound?
Setter to respond!
DeleteCol. has marked 'this Desi' as the def. I think that explains my point.
DeleteAgree with you and Colonel Sir😊
Delete"Baharini confused this about Desi name." - @Paddy 13:45
Delete"this Desi" with the placeholder "this" to indicate that the definition is in the middle has to appear together. Also, there is a typo in your clue - It should be Bahraini not Baharini.
The way a CA has to be structured is that the anagrind should separate both the parts appearing between them such that it can work on both.
In this clue,
Part 1 = BAHRAINI, confused = Anagram of BAHRAINI
Part 2 = Confused ABOUT THIS DESI NAME = Anagram of {A BIHARI N}
With the anagrind "confused" acting on both parts.
I am not a fan of this construction.
DeleteA CA should have all the other fodder and only all the other fodder visible in the clue.
Asking to guess abbreviations!!!!
And especially the abracadabra about!
That's a treasure hunt clue. Not a cryptics IMHO.
DeleteThank you Sowmya. My confusion is cleared when we take the def. as ' This desi' as indicated by Col.
Delete17D: Kipling character = gunga din
ReplyDeleteUnited is u
Noise is din
(Gang)* making anagrind
Hence, ((g(u)nga din))
