I must admit NJ has conjured up quite a good CW today
ReplyDeleteHi, very true.
ReplyDeleteYep, that's exactly what I felt.
ReplyDeleteThere are still some doubts though.
15A: Don't know how "threatened" became "HEARTED."
21: Not sure how "three" became "TER."
18A: Anno not clear
My explanation for 18A:
ReplyDeleteGuys = sailors = ABs = ABS
are in no hurry = late = indicator that ABS comes after....
initially to catch = C, first letter of "catch."
the black taxis = def = CABS
1A Man is a poor def for follower.
ReplyDeleteter is a prefix meaning three
ReplyDeleteBhavan, Thanks... So it's short for tertiary then. Never heard of this abbreviation.
ReplyDeleteI think the anno for 15A is
CHICK (EN HEARTED)*
CHICK = bird species
Thanks Suresh.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on 1A. FOLLOWER is not a good definition for "man." A better word could have been used.
15A NJ has been known to use ten, nine etc to mean time. So it is difficult to guage what is in her mind
ReplyDeleteCHICK would not be a bird species
ReplyDeleteRe CABS is it possible that NJ forgot about the 'P' in CHAPS?
ReplyDeleteDeepak, there's no AInd. So perhaps "species" is the anagram indicator and CHICK is just bird.
ReplyDeleteWell they say Impossible is nothing.
Suresh (949), quite possible.
VJ Species can hardly be an Anind. It doesn't make sense. Threatened could be the anind and fodder combined
ReplyDeleteGood Morning all
ReplyDeleteAt last it is 100% on NJ for me today (first time). Surprising it is an NJ act and i pinched myself for confirming the reality. Anno for canterbury, and cabs niggled me. Now it is clear.
I thank VJ and Hari for their discussion yesterday in dwelling on a clue and leave out the preconceived notions about the setter. I have done just that and phew...a full grid smiles at me within an hour.
Good day
Mathu
Suresh, I know, species is hardly an anagram indicator. That's why I said nothing is impossible. It's hard to predict what NJ's got in her mind.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Madhu!!
ReplyDeleteMuch better CW today. I didn't take time to finish... but I think I'm sure I could have come close at least. Got things to do... so am stopping with a handful of clues left.
ReplyDelete@ Mathu: Congrats! That's an achievement... doing NJ for the first time! Awesome! Maybe I'll share the same news soon! :)
Gotta run, so will return and catch up on the blog. :)
Cheers all!
Congrats Madhu. Anno for cabs is not clear to any of us. If it is clear to you please share it with us
ReplyDeleteThe cartoon for EDEN is hilarious. The expression 'how did you manage to mistake' takes the cake.
ReplyDeleteLNS refer your post in the comments section of the 01 Oct blog which is reproduced below

Caan you send me aa mail please?
LNS
I have since deleted that post. Richard's comment giving my views is still there.
If you send me your e-mail ID I will send you a copy of the comment that you had made as it is not fit enough to be reproduced here.
Regards,
Col Deepak Gopinath
I can quote that comment from memory 'cause I remember it so vividly. I was trying to break my head trying to figure out what it was supposed to mean LOL.

ReplyDeleteSandhya yesterday 2152:
ReplyDeleteI was tempted to post:
The boys said,"Come with us please,
We plan to go to watch a strip tease"
I said "Lead me on,
For every day morn,
I am occupied with NJ's Cryptease."
But then a Particular Person's spectre was haunting me with a reproachful look in its eyes ! So no Demi, no Moore, only demure.
To Guys and Gals, except Shuchi (please dont think I am discriminating)
ReplyDeleteShuchi has posted a contest on her blog.
Re Coinage of CrypTease

ReplyDeleteCOL and Richard,
ReplyDeleteI don't read all posts. Nor do I read every day. So my apologies.
LNS
Copy of my mail to Deepak:
ReplyDeleteDeepak,
With due respect, I can't apologize for heart-felt remarks.
You could tell me that the remark was off-charter which I would agree with entirely. The right course of action then would be to allow me to withdraw such remarks. You have however unilaterally deleted my remarks.
If you say it is irresponsible as indeed you have, my next question is 'what in your esteemed opinion is the responsibility of a poster in your blog?' Loyalty to 'The HINDU' comes up as the only rational answer. If that's the case, your blog takes a tumble in my esteem. In any case, do your readers know that this loyalty is expected from them? I would write a charter and set this expectation.
In any case this is a blog, not a newspaper. People talk about their lives, express their opinions on many things but it seems 'The HINDU' is off- limits. So what's this blog? The Pravda?
You can throw me out of your blog but you have no right to demand an apology from me. And you're not getting one.
Warm Regards,
LNS
LNS, I think you've see this from Colonel's perspective. As the owner of this blog, he's directly or indirectly responsible for all the comments posted on this page. If a certain group takes offense to any of the comments, it might turn out to be unpleasant for Colonel and not just the person who posted the comment.
ReplyDeleteFor instance (worst case), take this example. When "draw Mohammad" contest was hosted by an anonymous user on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Facebook was pulled up for the content (it was not just that anonymous user). So, being a sensitive issue, if Colonel believes that your comment was unsuitable, it's only fair that you accept his view. Well this is my opinion.
LNS,
ReplyDeleteYes this is a blog and people can express their opinion but definitely not in the spiteful language that you had used. It is my blog and I have the sole right to decide what is appropriate or inappropriate and I retain the right to delete whatever I deem as unfit.
As I was offline I had passed the message to Richard to get the comment deleted, Richard, diplomatically, did post a comment without naming you, asking for the comment to be deleted, you may see his comment at 19:29 on 01 Oct. Inspite of that the comment was not deleted till I came back online on 04 Oct which is when I deleted your comment which in my opinion was spiteful and unsavoury.
In the light of the views expressed by you, you are no longer welcome to comment on my blog and any comments made by you will be unilaterally deleted by me.
I am replying through the blog as you have deemed it fit to post your reply to me over here.
Regards,
Col Gopinath
I would have restrained from commenting on this unsavoury episode but for the fact that LNS has placed his reply to Deepak publicly here.
ReplyDeleteNow, I believe a message was put in the blog itself for LNS to remove his remarks; I believe a mail was sent to him by Richard to delete them. Yet for a couple of days that was not done. Only when Deepak came back online did he delete the offensive comment. So how can the commenter say the deletion was done 'unilaterally' without giving him an opportunity to withdraw the remarks? I find this passing strange.
Who says this blog expects fealty to the paper? Surely any criticism against the paper would have remained here undeleted if it had been couched in polite language.
It's the blog owner who is responsible for any offensive passage in it. So he has the right to moderate it. For a person to use someone else's blog to make a comment which Richard the journalist, Deepak the owner, I, VJ and possibly many others consider inappropriate and when it is removed ask whether this blog is authoritarian and does not allow freedom of speech is again utterly strange.
Who prevents the commenter to own a blog himself and make such remarks therein and take responsibility for them and face the consequences if any?
@Kishore:
ReplyDelete(17:54)- :))
(18:01)- Thank you for the info.
I personally feel that though we can have light banter, we should avoid commenting on serious matters in this forum or making comments that may hurt any reader directly or indirectly. One cannot break the house rules of decency in debate, even if unstated, or overstay the host's invitation. The host (in this case the Colonel), in my opinion, has the right to admit or restrict admission under his roof.
ReplyDeleteBye Bye LNS. We won't miss you
ReplyDeleteIt's late, but for the sake for consistency: 13A is missing an I.
ReplyDeleteThanks Navneeth,
