7D. Art ad= commerical pic.
ReplyDeleteOr art= pic? Couldn't find a synonym to the best of my search
I presumed adcart as a commercial pic?
Commercial= Ad
ReplyDeletePicture= Art ( imagine a painting)
Withdrawn- reversal
I didn't get picture = art.chec ked the dictionaries..perhaps I need a deepercheck to do
ReplyDeleteWhy a deeper check etc. ? An oil painting etc. is called a picture and it is a piece of art. Sometimes dic. alone don't give you the complete picture.
ReplyDeleteIs the picture (Drawing) above by Prasanna a form of art?
DeletePainting is an art, not picture. It could be an example of art.
DeleteHere is the definition of picture from the dictionary " a visual representation of a person, object, or scene, as a painting, drawing, photograph, etc.:
DeleteYes. Its visual representation using an art form.
DeletePainting is a synonym for art as in the skill to use paint.
Painting is a synonym for picture as in visual representation.
But two diff defs.
When Ravi Varma paints a God, it is art/ painting and when it is transformed into a calendar, it becomes a picture.
DeleteToday's print edition of TH (Metroplus) carries the start of new Quick CW (instead of one by Guardian). And guess who sets the ball rolling?!! One Doppelganger!! Yes,we know him well.
ReplyDeleteI am not seeing Metroplus edition in today's e-paper
DeleteIt is there with the Chennai edition
DeleteThanks Col, I liked it.
DeleteDid you notice he has signed his name in 23d!
DeleteIt was a pretty pass, Paddy. It didn't strike me
DeleteThank you Prasanna for the thoughtful picture of a crane on May Day. And it says 1.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteSathia
Thanks to Paddy sir & Mr Sathia
DeleteMy sincere thanks to Col.sir for posting my Artwork.
When I am setting clues to our coterie, the wordsmiths are accusing me of verb/ noun mismatch .. Usually in CW, this mismatch is not a serious concern. Right?
ReplyDeleteIt is a serious concern
DeletePOS match is a must. Def and s has to be one.
DeleteThank you gentlemen
DeleteCan i share the clue that I set , with you , Colonel sir, privately ( in your mail)?
DeletePart of speech of definition must be the same . You can't even have "to talk" for "speech" even if "to" is a connector. But you can have the same word in the surface and cryptic readings to be used in different parts of speech and, in fact, it is part of misdirection which is an important element of cryptic crosswords
DeleteNice artwork Prasanna ji on May Day.
ReplyDeleteCrane happens to be the one of the
first technological innovations which
reduced labour(took away jobs?)!!
Thank you Devi sir. Now w/o crane and technologies things will not move. the comforts should provide the ground level labours..........
Delete3D: OVERSEES
ReplyDeleteDef = runs
Homophone of OVERSEAS = away
escaping from trap = homophone indicator (trap = mouth)
I thought it is a DD
DeleteRuns away =Overstep= escaping from trap.
Sathia
Great solve Ramki..............
Delete+1
DeleteI filled in with the help of crossings but could not parse it.
Sathia, Runs/ runs away does not go with 'Overstep'
Indicators should be straight,not derivative/wp.
DeleteInformal trap to mouth, escapes from mouth to slip of tongue to hp. Too much word play.
me too sir...I could not make anno. like Ramki.....however the answer is correct.
DeletePrasad ji , it’s a common HP Ind, apparently
DeleteBritish crossies, I agree.
DeleteWorks for me and I think it’s quite useful 🙂
DeleteNo No from me. Because thats a plougher route.
DeleteGridman used to say that we generally follow British CW's.
DeleteExcept for 8 Down, that is, Grapevine, today I found almost all other clues, clueless. In my view, some clues are absurd - for instance, how come "Runs Away, Escaping From Trap" (3-Down) becomes "Oversees" ?
ReplyDeleteAway = overseas
DeleteEscaping from trap = coming out from mouth = homophone indicator
Homophone of overseas = oversees = Runs
