Hmmm . . . . I found some things really interesting while setting this puzzle. Obviously, the first thing that entered the grid was 22d. And then, something else happened, and then something else happened, and then the concept-sort-of-theme emerged. And then towards the end, while setting clues, two of the themed characters came together and sort of closed a loop.
24a : SUMMER OF 69(Bryan adams song) 26a : ON CALL (circa fifty fifty) 24x7 (168 hrs a week = 24x7) 22d : 1917 (not sure the anno, but 1917 is the name of a movie, which seems to fit the grid pattern)
I'm sure The Hindu and newspapers won't allow numerals. But what is Colonel's rule for this blog? I allowed myself to put numerals in my puzzle, and I quite liked it. I've put numerals in at least one more puzzle I've set after this one.
