Spoonerism is great, but why is it that I kept on thinking about a laptop rather than a raincoat?!
ReplyDelete14A- I had always spelt it as Banaras but I find this is alt spelling. Trouble with writing Indian names in English!!
ReplyDeleteFriend= Buddy= Bud.
ReplyDeleteI would have preferred an indication for the abbreviation.
Bud is informal and a word on its own though etymology is from buddy.
DeleteYes, Bud (buddy), refers to sort of platonic, ideal relationship. You say bud and you mean someone is a friend.
DeletePeople do say, hey bud!
It can sometimes be used condescendingly as well.
Thank you Hypatia for an absorbing hour.
ReplyDeleteExcellent CW by Hypatia (Soumya).
ReplyDeleteNostalgic computer game Pac-Man,
Indian fast food Bhel puri,
Fun in Donald (trump) quacks… and many others. My COD is 10A.
Sathia
Donald quacks ! Really it is a stricture on poor Trump.
DeleteCrossworder' s roar perhaps:
You! hypocrite lecteur!—mon semblable,—mon frère”: Baudelaire’s and Eliot both came to my mind.
Donald Trump/ Donald Duck (choose yours) quacks!!!
DeleteThere's always an escape clause!!!
Yes, I was in a soup for a while!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Paddy and Sathia for your kind remarks.
ReplyDeleteAs for me, just wanted to let you all know that my family and I are safe and in Chennai now having moved back three weeks ago amidst the intense situation in Bahrain. Our journey back was quite an adventure but we have had a chance to unwind and spend a lot more time in my home town than we have done over many many years. Even adversities have a silver lining.
Thanks to technology, the three of us have been working from home and this was the first Hindu crossword that I created entirely in Chennai :)
The Arab archipelago that we really miss, my favourite chaat item and an old video game I used to play got a nod in this puzzle.
It's good news that there has finally been a cease fire, so my May puzzles will mostly be from Bahrain again.
Thanks for blogging Vasant. There is a minor typo in the abbreviations list (for America) - please amend when possible.
Good to know you are safe. Hope this thin temporary ceasefire will pave way for broader peace in siran and surrounding GCC.
DeleteSathia
Glad you are home safe.
DeleteSuggest to wait for some more time (if possible) for peace to last. One feels like things are still in a mess.
My friend (from Bangalore) had a harrowing time and return journey from Saudi (with splinters falling all over the place near his residence and office)
Good to know you and your family are safe. Thanks for pointing out the typo.
DeleteGood to know.
DeleteBenares, Bhel puri, Buddha, Mulligatawny soup... gave the usual Indian touch and the setter's adopted city Baharain.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to India, home. Probably, after some days when everything aging is encouraging, you could get to Bahrain.
ReplyDeleteHappy stay, hapoy times !
Naresh
