  1. 4A is Kabaddi Ka for 'the spiritual part of the indiidual human being which survived after death and could reside in the person's statue' bad is not good and di is double

  2. Could 4 A be Kabaddi?

Also 12D I thought it was Amathus, which is an ancient city of Cyprus - although anno is unclear...

  3. Suresh,
Congrats on the solution for 4A
    Jotter,
AMATEUR is correct no doubt on that one, see the link provided if you want to clear your doubt. UR is the ancient city reffered to in the clue

  4. Yesterday's mystery answer was Tofus. Can't figure out how. Maybe NJ should join the blog and clarify

  5. I was stuck at just a very few clues today.

    29 Across - Brown firework (6) - MAROON

Now it looks easy. Did not get until I logged in here.

5 Down was so easy. AIDS being an acronym did not flash my mind.

Similarly, could not guess 18 Down could be a compound word FOOLPROOF.

Looks like further honing of skills is required. Getting a lot of guidance here.

    Thanks

    Richard

  6. Suresh

'Ur' is very often used for ancient city by different setters. When you could hit upon 'Kabaddi' so brilliantly, wonder how you could not get 'Ur'.

    No offence please.

  10. Turn over the pages of French articles on the extremities of fanatics (5) - {LE}{A}{FS}

I am unable to make much of this clue and would be grateful for any comments.
First of all, what is the def? If it's 'turn over the pages' as in 'leaf through the pages' then the answer can only be LEAF, not LEAFS.
How do we get LE A? French articles? French by itself cannot give LE. From French articles we can derive LE, LA but not LE A (the latter being English).

FS is of course from "extremities of fanatics" but I am not looking too deep at the extremities, whatever they may be.

Can you visualise the image from the clue? At first I thought someone was turning over the pages on the extremities of fanatics; later I realised that they were turning only the pages and indeed the articles were on the extremities of fanatics.

  11. That is a nice and subtle observation Mr.Chaturvasi.

The technical points on the wording of the clue are as usual correct. You would not find these inaccuracies in an Economic Times crossword.

  12. There is a dedicated Orkut community that solves the ET crossword, besides the New Indian Express crossword. See links at left panel of this blog.

  13. Our Hub friends are less 'sportive', I suspect! They want 'kabbadi' to be replaced with 'canards'! And convincingly too!

  14. Convince me on canards. I cannot see the the annotation

  15. Here is what the hubber says:

4a : (Clue) "Individuality is not good for the double game".

CANARDS SYNONYMS: DUPLICITY (INDIVIDUALITY IS NO GOOD)
    DOUBLE-DEALING (DOUBLE GAME)

  16. Sounds good. Wonder what NJ has inmind

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't believe in canards. I am game only for KABADDI, for which Suresh has given perfect justification.
