Feels good tobe back home and doing the CW in B&W on the paper, I never enjoyed doing it on the computer screen, have always preferred the good old newspaper and pencil

GRID
Hi Colonel
ReplyDeleteI know how uncomfortable it is to do the crossword on the computer screen. I do it regularly with the ET crossword, since it is not published in Vizag.
When you travel it may be a good idea to carry printouts of the standard grids so that you can write on the paper instead of on the computer. It solves half the problem
Col.
ReplyDeleteANGEL seems ok after sight, but the first thing I thought was DONER, DONER coins are gold coin donations and a kind person is a DONER.
Do you think this was a valid pattern for thinking ? Struggled with ALERTING after I had DONER in though :)
Hi Ramna,
ReplyDeleteI have not heard of the meaning of DONER as quoted by you. A net search revealed only Doner kebabs !
Hello Colonel,
ReplyDeleteTricked the doctor around in court in Spain (5) - DUPED Anno pending
DD could stand for Doctor of Divinity. That leaves UPE unexplained.
14a reminded me of another clue for the same phrase, an excellent &lit by Don Manley in the FT crossword:
One differs from austere lot (5-5)
Tricked the doctor around in court in Spain (5)
ReplyDeleteUntil now I had only parts. After I saw Shuchi giving up, I thought hard and here we go:
Tricked - def
the
doctor - DD
around - inserticator
in court - UP ('up' means to be in court as also at college as we sometimes see in the Sunday HC and other UK crosswords)
in
Spain - E from Espanol
Re LOTUS EATER
ReplyDeleteThe ET/Daily Mail xwd once had:
Idle one turning to employment after a time outside (5-5)
Chaturvasi,
ReplyDeleteIf that is the anno for 12D, it is difficult to believe that the clue is original
Col,
ReplyDeleteJust a doubt on BOSH=? American
Raghunth,
ReplyDeleteMaybe NJ misspelt BUSH as he is famous for his slip-ups!!!
Ha, ha, kind of sweet revenge on old Bush, eh?
