No 9764, Friday 12 Feb 10, Neyartha

Posting from Coimbatore. This appears to be a starred clue Crossword from Neyartha with the stars missing? Neyartha has clarified over at ORKUT group as follows
"The Hindu has some discrepancies in today's published puzzle. Before they put up the corrections on a later date (when it would be of no use to the crossword solvers), I am taking advantage of this forum to bring them to the notice of the solvers.

The puzzle is supposed to have a preamble as below:

Seven solutions in this puzzle were red once upon a time. They are not defined any further.
10 Ac. is supposed to read as : The hill Al scrambled up in a poor condition (3,6) instead of The hill A1 scrambled up in a poor condition (3,6)
I would also like to clarify that the errors were solely the responsibility of The Hindu and not a slip on the part of the compiler. "
I presume the once upon a time Red ones are are 13A, 18A, 5D, 6D, 19D, 21D & 23D?

  2. Good morning everyone:

Half way through, I realized the theme for today was names of different countries. The first one to throw the hint was ETHIOPIA and could make out that that the trademark asterisk and the accompanying note were missing.

    I liked 29A in particular.

BTW, so refreshing to see so many joining in. Congrats again, Colonel.

  3. 's is a connector, if you were wondering about the possessive. It is not possessive in the clue but is a syncopation for 'is'.

  4. I presume the clues 'were once red' means they were Communist-ruled, right?

  5. Sorry, Col, for pointing out:

1D - Aaron in trouble, pocketing last letter from the U.S. resident (8) - ARI{Z}ONIAN*

I guess it is a typo. The answer is ARIZONAN (8 LETTERS).

  6. 25 down: Bird in trouble, perhaps, after the student runs off(5)BUTEO(-l)*

Where does the R in TROUBLE go?

  7. @ Sandhya,

    Bird : Required definition
    in : Connector
trouble, perhaps : Anagram fodder and indicator
    after the : connectors
    student runs : L R (R = runs - cricket terminology)
    off : Deletion indicator

  8. R for 'runs' is OK because that is what it indicates in the statistical tables.

  9. What I meant to say was that the plural form was admissible.

  10. @Neyartha:Thank you for the clarification.
In that case, the anno should be BUTEO(-lr)*

  11. @richlas:

Yes, 'were once red' was intended to indicate former communist states.

  12. Hi all,
Sorry for all the errors but I saw Neyartha's remarks at the ORKUT group after I had completed everything and put question marks all over the place, once I saw the clarification there I had to comeback and edit my scheduled post and redo everything hence the errors.

    @CHaturvasi,
Regarding 28A Girl's notice would mean 'Girl is notice' which makes no sense in the surface reading

  13. Thanks, Neyartha. Never thought you would appear here some day to clarify solvers' queries. Very nice of you.

  14. 19 down:A lab building accomodates the Indian news agency.{ALBA*}{NIA*}
As pointed out by Neyartha on Orkut, the anno should be ALB{ANI)A*

  15. Hi Colonel, 28A: "'s" denotes the possessive on the surface, and switches to "is" in the cryptic reading. Perfectly admissible.

  17. I hate to have to say this, but I think it is ridiculous that a key piece of information (re the starred clues) was left out. I like @Richlas' logic of Ethiopia giving them the lead (all credit to Richlas), but then, that point could be stretched a bit (or a lot) and in many directions !

Can those that can, please ensure that The Hindu publishes an apology that suitably addresses the waste of precious early morning time? Thank you!

  18. Okay about the 's and is.
But I may sound dumb, I stll don't get the surface reading of the clue.
What would be the meaning of 'Girl's notice to get rid of a hectare..'

If I am not mistaken, your Mom lives in Coimbatore and you are there to visit her. Pls convey sincere wishes for good health and long life, from my family and me.

  20. I feel this crossword to be more of a riddle than a crossword. I don't see any logic in some of the clues.

  21. What would be the meaning of 'Girl's notice to get rid of a hectare..'

:) You have a point there, Colonel. My defence was only for the grammar.

  22. I could do everything except 25 down. Other than the Dodger clue, not one gave me any pleasure. Workmanlike compilation and solving are all very fine but perhaps the compiler needs to address the 'Aha' needs of the solvers.

  23. @Richard,
Yes I am here to attend the wedding of my schoolmates son. Will convey your regards to my mother

  24. @Krishna,
That is because the preamble to the crossword was left out by someone att THE HINDU. Neyartha's CW's are like this and generally have an underlying theme, which needs to be understood to get the logic

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Srinivasakrishnan,
Except for the part of the missing preamble, I don't feel the CW was all that bad

  26. I could get just a handful today, totally zapped me.

  27. 'Girl's notice to get rid of a hectare..'

My understanding of the surface reading is that it would refer to the contents of a poster that a girl has put up in order to dispose off some parcel of land in a Caribbean country.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Girl’s notice to get rid of a hectare in a Caribbean country (5)

IMO, this clue is OK in surface reading as well as wordplay.

First, in surface reading we can understand that the girl has given notice to someone that she is getting rid of a piece of land somewhere.

In wordplay. "Girl" or the word that we get from that, is "whatever the wordplay".

I am unable to understand where any problem lies.

  32. 23D - Open heart replacement by chief neurologist - can you please clarify more ?

  33. Missed making a point:

    4D - Barber shop’s sitting room (5) - SALON [DD]

In India, in most cases you come across 'So-and-so Haircutting SalOOn', whereas 'Salon' would be more appopriate.

    From an online dictionary:

    SALON:

    1. a drawing room or reception room in a large house.

    2. an assembly of guests in such a room, esp. an assembly, common during the 17th and 18th centuries, consisting of the leaders in society, art, politics, etc.

    3. a hall or place used for the exhibition of works of art.

    4. a shop, business, or department of a store offering a specific product or service, esp. one catering to a fashionable clientele: a dress salon; a hair salon.

    5. (initial capital letter) (in France) a. the Salon, an annual exhibition of works of art by living artists, originally held at the Salon d'Apollon: it became, during the 19th century, the focal point of artistic controversy and was identified with academicism and official hostility to progress in art.
    b. a national exhibition of works of art by living artists: Salon des Refusés; Salon des Indépendants.

    SALOON:

    1. a place for the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks.

    2. a room or place for general use for a specific purpose: a dining saloon on a ship.

    3. a large cabin for the common use of passengers on a passenger vessel.

    4. British. a. (in a tavern or pub) a section of a bar or barroom separated from the public bar and often having more comfortable furnishings and a quieter atmosphere.
    b. saloon car.

    5. a drawing room or reception room.

Remember having had a nice exchange on 'puncher' / 'puncture' shop signboards here in this forum some time ago.

The above too may elicit similar responses.

  34. Open heart replacement by chief neurologist

    Open - BEGIN
heart - G (centre of begin)
replacement by - indicator for replacing
    chief - position indicator
chief neurologist - N (first of neurologist)

therefore N replaces G in BEGIN to get BENIN which is one of the answers indicated in the missing preamble

  35. Thanks Colonel. Now it is crystal clear :-)
