  1. Good morning everyone

Deepak, I put down MISTLETOE at 23A only based on crossings. What's the anno, please?

4D, 16D - nice clues leading to phrases made up of shorter words.

  2. 15D Wallaby in lane – moped crashed (9) PADEMELON

The 'lane moped' anagram fodder was clear. But PADEMELON is a new word for me, BTW, doesn't it sound like the name of a fruit? :-)

  3. Hi Richard,
I'm surprised to get this question from you of all people!
Isn't mistletoe taken down from the front door after the New Year is over?
This CW must have appeared just before the New Year in the Guardian of the UK that's why the clues 23A and 4D have such wording.

  4. @Richard, Wallaby refers to animals such as the Kangaroo. Pademelon is another of the same family

  5. Liked 17A. Ofcourse you must know that the compiler is British to get the context

  7. 1A Anno I think should be {TIFF}{ANY}. The def would be New York Jeweller

  8. 16 down: I didn't understand the anno of T EASE

  9. @Sandhya,
GUY and TEASE are synonymous lookit up

  10. 16D. TEASE would mean something like a trailer for something bigger to come. An advertisement whin=ch only raises the expectation of something interesting to come up would be called a tease. So it would be equated to 'sent up at first'. Sent up doing double duty here

  14. As young girls' habit of reading Mills and Boon type of novels in my youth I too have read a lot of such stuff and got familiar with many 'social' customs of the English people- one such has an association- a titillating one!!!- with mistletoe at the entrance which gave 'licence' for lovers to kiss if met under that!

  17. Col,
18D:How do you get 's' after "handy"? Is it anything to do with excercises?

    ReplyDelete
  18. @ Sadaiyappan

Just in case Col is not online

Last character in 'exercises' = S
    Useful = HANDY
