  1. Hi everyone

The only clue that foxed me - 10D.

    Nice ones: 16A, 13D and 16D.

The surface reading of 10D can amuse anyone.

  2. Hi everyone, I have been a silent spectator on this blog for around couple of months now as I usually do my crossword while travelling on the delhi metro later on in the day. So only check late night when the debates are all put to bed.

Used to do the crossword in school and college but have restarted it after a long hiatus and thoroughly enjoy it. Today is one of those rare days where I have done the crossword early as Sankalak is effortless and does not eat into my gym time

The only clue which ironically eluded me was the one with the delhi connection.... which being a dilliwalla i missed....I guess it could have been better clued as one does not think of a Hindustani word .... The rest was a cinch...

BTW, the crossword article was in the Hindu edition of Delhi yesterday

  3. For 10D, how does the clue indicate that an "s" needs to be removed? Thank you

  4. @ Veer. Docked is the indicator

  5. Atmosphere created by return of Indian language in church (7) - C{LIMAT<-}E

For me, 'Indian Language' w/o an indefinite article in front of it suggests Hindi, the official language. I think insertion of 'an' is required to indicate tamil or any other regional language for that matter.

  6. English crosswords have "in France" or even "in Paris" or "in Nice" to suggest that the word we are looking for is a French word. Here "in Delhi" strongly suggests that we need a word in Hindi.

I am only worried if Azhagiri would insist that compilers use "in Madurai" or "in Chennai" and have components in Tamil.

  7. 10D stumped me too, otherwise quite a sitter of a crossword today.

  8. @maddy,
You are on dangerous ground about your suggestion of Hindi as the official langiage, that too wrt something appearing in a Chennai based paper!!
I was in school in the mid 60's and saw the turmoil at that time on this issue.

  9. @Suresh: Thank you. Nice use of the indicator making for an economy of words in the clue.

  10. @maddy. I agree with Colonel on this. Indian language could be any Indian language. Infact the first that came to my mind for some reason was Tamil

  11. @Suresh,
I suppose if it were NJ the first language that would come to mind would be Hindi or Hinglish!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. If it was NJ it could be anything, not necessarily language or Indian

    ReplyDelete
  13. @Suresh - that's funny! - If it was NJ it could be Anything. True.
@Col. - At 1st I thought NJ was New Jersey, and I said to myself - the languages that come to mind are, indeed, Hindi & Tamil ;-)

  14. Hi,
I am a novice in THC and came to know of this site from the article in The Hindu Bangalore edition. I want to thank you Colonel for this wonderful Blog.
    I had some questions.
16A: Atmosphere created by return of Indian language in church (7) - C{LIMAT<-}E - What is the significance of church in this clue?
17A: Pole in a boating trip, not one noted for speed (5) - S{N}AIL- How do we figure out that we need to insert {N} in SAIl?

    ReplyDelete
  15. @ sriharsha

17 A: pole here is north pole which is N.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Sriharsha,
In CW parlance CE represents church, some setters use CH also for church.

Regarding 17A, it goes as follows

    Pole = N
    in = insertion indicator
    a boating trip = SAIL
not one noted for speed = Definition = S{N}AIL

I also suggest you visit Shuchi's blog 'Crossword Unclued', the link is available on the left panel of this page, her site gives you a lot of tips on solving crosswords

  17. Colonel,

Is there a logic to this usage ? using CE for church.

  19. I also wanted to know what is the significance of the words 'soldier' and 'sailor' which often appear in the clues...

    ReplyDelete
  20. I guess in crosswords, CE stands for Church of England.

    Richard

  21. @Shruti,
There are a number of ways soldier and sailor can be represented in CW's for example Sailor can be AB, TAR etc and Soldier can ve RA(Royal Artillery), TA(Territorial Army) and so on, I suggest you visit Crossword Unclued where you will find answers to all your crossword related questions
