Hello friends
ReplyDeleteClues I liked: 11A, 16A, 24A, 4D, 6D and 17D.
Correctly guessed, without anno being clear: 1A and 29A
11A The girl next door (9) NEIGHBOUR - Although it does not fit in there, somehow the very first word that came to my mind was PADOSAN ! :-) (Remember the evergreen classic comedy film in Hindi, with Mahmood in the lead and directed by Jyoti Swaroop?
29A Chemical expert getting firsts in the yearly exams (6) ACETYL - The firsts of 'the yearly exams' makes 'TYE' and not 'TYL'. (Yes, it has been pointed out above, as I can see.)
6D Valmiki for one (9) MAHARISHI - This is the correct form, while in common parlance MAHARSHI is used, as in the case of Ramana Maharshi and Maharshi Yogi. This may have foxed some solvers.
18D The commonly-heard name being HERBAL TEA, this came as a surprise, although not wrong.
Richard
Even this was a nice clue, though an easy anagram.
ReplyDelete25A - A dress, one tailored is what a good driver needs (4,5) - ROAD SENSE*
Richard
Certainly don't know about reiki repairing switches, but it certainly gives relief from common ailments like headaches, besides energising the body.
ReplyDeleteI practice it everyday
29A. ACETYL
ReplyDeleteDo you think that with NJ around the corner, the influence is already being felt.
1 down: What does NOI mean?
ReplyDeleteSandhya, No. 1
ReplyDeleteIt has been one of my smaller goals in life to solve the HCW 100 %. Iam now on 60 to 80 % level. But after logging on to Col Gopinaths blog for the last 4 days, I am quite sure that am edging my way to reaching my goal very very soon . Tks a lot .
ReplyDeleteIn todays 2 D what is the connection between TREE and " circumvent growth "
Hello friends, today I stumbled badly - faltered at 4 clues 29D, 30D, 4A and 23A.
ReplyDelete@Usha: The ways (sts) circumvents the growth (tree).
ReplyDeleteRichard, Padosan was made in Tamil as Adutha Veetu Pen and it was a rollicking comedy starring T R Ramachandran , Thangavelu and Anjali Devi. If I am right, I think the movie was made in several other languages too.
ReplyDeleteUsha, I am sure you will be cracking all the clues in The Hindu Crossword very soon.
ReplyDelete@Suresh: Thank you. I seem to miss the simplest of things!!
ReplyDeleteI've been off touch with THC fr a while nw ... I'm no expert but I absolutely enjoy trying to crack the grid .. I'm back to solvin 'em after a long time, and just whn I get tht zest back, I have a Jaggi to deal with ! OMG ! Pl. Hindu! I implore you to cut down in NJ and give more puzzles to Gridman and Sankalak!
ReplyDeleteSpl. mention to the colonel.
Cheers all :)
@Usha & Pip in the Midwest:
ReplyDelete2down Ways for good men to circumvent growth (7)S{TREE}TS
ways: meaning STREETS
growth: TREE
good men: STS(saints)
circumvent: surround
(STS surround TREE)
Oops. Sorry. That's what I meant. Too sleepy. Thanks Sandhya.
ReplyDelete@Pip in the Midwest: If are in the Midwest, you really must be sleepy :)
ReplyDelete@Pip,
ReplyDeleteNothing to be sorry about, what you have written is the same as what Sandhya has elaborated.
@ Suresh re: Reiki and switches -
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine here says Reiki has helped him in being cured of a headache which used to constantly switch places, something known as migraine.
Richard
Maybe Suresh or Richlas can answer this question on Reiki: can it help alleviate or cure Lupus which is an autoimmune ailment I believe? Thanks
ReplyDelete@ Veer
ReplyDeleteRe Reiki: Sorry, I have neither a RAY of information about it nor a KEY to your query.
Richard
I am not a Reiki master and have only done a 1st degree course. I do not know what is Lupus.
ReplyDeleteSeveral claims are made by practitioners and masters.
It could promote general wellness and health, but it takes a little over an hour every day, at least half an hour.
Since it wolrks with other lines of treatment. it is well worth a try.
@Suresh, @Richlas, Thanks for responding. Your comments on Reiki piqued my interest and hence the query. I couple of my friends also fervently believe in the healing powers of Reiki but for some reason, I have always been a sceptic.
ReplyDelete@Richard: Aiming to be a X word setter for The Hindu? (RAY KEY)
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could replace Nita Jaggi:D
@ Sandhya: No ambition of that kind, since it may be a long way to go. While acknowledging that part of the compliment, I do not find the thought of replacing someone (!) very comfortable.
ReplyDeleteRichard
23D Fish with both sides in deep water - Can somebody tell me how the answer was arrived at ?
ReplyDeleteI know R and L are for sides. Is MA an indicator ?
@ Krishnan: MAIN is a literary term for a vast ocean or sea. So RL inserted to make it MARLIN.
ReplyDeleteRichard
Thanks Richard.
ReplyDeletesome of the clues are really artificial especially the adonis one; the whole clue doesnt make any sense!
