  1. This compiler is tough! Here are explanations for some of the gaps:

    1A: Harbours = PORTS, a = A, revolutionary => reversal indicator for {PORTS A}
    doctor (cheat) => anagram of CHEAT
    besieged by => containment indicator. So the answer is CAT{A STROP}<- HE.

    11A: EVENT [2]

    20A: CANTHI (anag of CHINSTRAP - SRP)

    24A: I read this as ocean liner = SHORE, model = T, but then EMPLE is unexplained.

    1D: CANONISE. confession topic brought up => SIN reversed, craft = CANOE, in => containment indicator. "saint" is a verb in the cryptic reading.

    17D: WISEACRE. telegram = WIRE, containing => containment indicator, points = S, E, bill = AC.

    19D: turn off = DISPLEASE, censored Polish website => remove PL (the URL suffix for Polish websites), which gives DISEASE.

    22D: I think the answer is TAKEN, and it has a homophone with a word that means "musical direction" which eludes me at the moment.

    23D: BABEL. tag = LABEL, "A" follower = B, learner = L.
    takes off => B substitutes L.

  2. The last ones. Grid over. Phew :)

    9A: NO ONE. "Who leads an anarchy" is the definition. The rest of it still hazy.

    8D: BERTH. From the phrase "give a wide berth"

    I guess the answer is TACET {~tacit} ( Anno is easily fiigured out if the answer is known :) )

    NO ONE 's annotation is : NO O{-s+N}E (Substitution clue)

  4. Sir,

    Please look at the annotations I have tried to provide on Mayyam forums. Hope they are of help in clarifying your doubts (in addition to what Shuchi has provided above)

    Thanks

  5. Got NO ONE from Kotirao. Trap = NOOSE (-N + N).
    Ocean Liner = Shore is not convincing
    1A is very misleading with Harbours and Besieged together moreover if cheat id besieged then Ports a should be around it. The clue should have been, 'Misfortune harbours a revolutionary besieged by doctor (cheat)'

  6. Ganesh,
    Thank you for enlightening me. Hope I can crack this constructors CW next time around, if nothing else she has generated some discussion other than the answers just being posted across various fora.
    Regards,
    Deepak

  7. Neyartha is the "Starred Clues" specialist, which strangely were absent. Will not be surprised if these are found in tomorrow's THC.

  8. Hello Colonel, I agree with your thoughts on the containment indicator in 1A. I actually liked the cryptic definition for SHORE in 24A, it is like using "layer" to define HEN or "flower" to define RIVER.

    Ganesh, Thanks for clearing up 22D! From the indicator placement, it looks like the solution will be a word for "understand" with the sound-alike word meaning "musical direction", and not the other way round as it turned out to be.

    What are Mayyam forums?

  9. Raghunath, you said it. With PALLAVAS and PANDYAS here, I wondered if we're onto a theme minus the stars.
