    Morning everyone

    Today, it was the turn of the bottom left corner of the grid to rattle me.

    Liked IDIOM, SHIFTLESS, BAROMETER, BANJOISTS, PLASTERED etc.

    With port, martini, intoxicated - hmmm... MM seems to be on a high today. ;-)

    Wonder where the extra Extra came from in 14d. By a stretch of imagination guns could also be held to heads ? So I put in Beretta. It was Bond’s gun till he switched to Walther PPK in Dr No. However, agree Biretta is better fit: to the head and to the clue

    I think 'small protection' for NAPKINS is fine as a lateral definition.

    It's strange. The blog shows '0' comments on IE and Chrome browsers. Firefox too says '0' but sometimes '3' as of now.

    Whats happening. I expected atleast 10 -15 comments on todays somewhat easy picking. Atleast i be the first comment atleast not in finishing the CW.

    I got stuck in epicene, banjoists, terrene. Otherwise it seems ok for even starter like me.

    What is the difference between "Cryptic Definitions - [CD]" and "Non-cryptic, easy type clue [E]"? Why is "11a - Characteristic mode of expression (5) - IDIOM" marked [CD] but "3d - Does it show the pressure of work at the Met Office (9) - BAROMETER" marked [E]? The latter is more cryptic than the former due to the double meaning of "pressure", and a much more interesting clue than the former.

    Re 14d: Where did the 'extra' come from.

    I had stretched my imagination and put down Beretta for 5a: it is something that could be held to a head. Beretta being Bond's handgun of choice till he changed to Walther PPK in Dr. No. Agree that Biretta is more fitting both to the head and to the clue.
