ReplyDeleteEnjoyed solving the puzzle in toto. Took an hour, though.
DA+CHA, LATE+RITE, BYWORD, FERMI, A+S+SAIL+ANT+, LAP+DOG(<-), HIGH GEAR, BREAKS, BR+OWN, DR+EAR(-l)Y, GRUE(~grew)+SOME, NUTTY, DIRTY LOOK, BALE+FUL(-l), RAT TRAP(<-), BET+RAY, DAYLIGHT ROBBERY, CHOR+ALE, AUDI+TO+R, AS+PIC, A+BAND+ON, OFFBEAT, AMOROSO, SUNDECK - liked all these. Hope I am right with BEARER at 21D.
BIRD TABLE, ATOMISER, AFFILIATE, TERRITORIAL ARMY - nice anagrams.
Deepak, thanks for posting the pics of the Jawa-Yezdi Rally on July 11 which I sent.
Laterite is used almost throughout the west coast, in Goa, Karnataka too. The 'bricks' which are about 1 ft x 1 ft x 2 ft are cut out of the earth and resemble huge Mysore pak pieces (the old rougher variety not the Special soft variety). Compound walls of these covered with moss during the monsoon give these areas a distinctive green look.
ReplyDeleteMy post )8:30 - it should read A+S+PIC
ReplyDeleteDogs continue to dog the CW (yesterday 19d and today 13d). I understand laptop computers are passe and top executives are looking for lap-top secretaries !
ReplyDeleteDeepak, nice pics...
ReplyDeleteWhat's with the license plate registrations starting with C?
The newer variety is called Mysorepa with no 'k' I think.
ReplyDeleteKishore, what comes next? less of lap and more of less?
ReplyDelete'CHOR' - cluing was interesting, not very frequent I suppose.
ReplyDeleteVJ @ 8:41
ReplyDeleteThere was a phase when Karnataka registration numbers started with C, I am not sure of which year it was.
Oh! Thanks Deepak
ReplyDeleteEarlier, when it was known as Mysore state, Karnatka had number-plates beginning with MY-. Later on, with the new nomenclature, new series CN- and CR were introduced with an intention of avoiding mix-up with Kerala's KR-. Now the two-character national pattern is in force and all numbers in Karnataka begin with KA.
ReplyDeleteHowever, many vehicles are still left with MY, CN and CR series, awaiting the end 15-year renewal tenure or being junked, whichever earlier.
Nice photos Deepak.
ReplyDeleteAnd nice grey T shirt too
Suresh,
ReplyDeleteThis was the YEZDI / JAWA T-Shirt so I had no option ;-)
Richard,
ReplyDeleteNumbers do not change after 15 years, only the fitness of the vehicles is assessed and renewed for peiods of 5 years after the first 15. My FIAT still has the number MDB 2591 which was when the car was re-registered at Coimbatore in 1965.
Sorry, Deepak, I stand corrected on that count.
ReplyDeleteWhen the number plates were based on Mysore state, the Mysore number plates were MY- whereas Madras Presidency ones were MA-. When they ran out/decided to change based on state names, K was common to Kerala and Karnataka, hence K-- went to Kerala and C went to Karnataka (based on the alternate spelling of Carnatic. Similar spelling logic like Cawnpore for Kanpur led to Kannada being spelt as Canara and led to Canara Bank, South Canara district etc.
ReplyDelete@ Giri: I think Mysurpa is a brand name for a variety of mysore pak of Sri Krishna Sweets
ReplyDelete@Kishore
ReplyDeleteYou are right about the origin of Mysurpa, I was under the impression that the soft Mysore pak you referred to was Mysurpa, but apparently that is a different variety I guess.

ewwww.... Even reading the word "Mysorepa" makes me wanna throw up. The traditional hard one's better IMO.
ReplyDeleteRegarding license plate registration: Thanks Richard, Deepak and Kishore for all the clarifications.
ReplyDeleteVJ: Agree that the laterite mysorepak is better than the greasy oil well that goes by the tailless name.
ReplyDeleteKish, 19:37 Oil is not well with the Mysore Pak?
ReplyDeleteI too prefer the traditional mysorepak. If prepared well, it has a texture and taste that the highly touted branded pak does not - and cannot - have.
ReplyDeleteDitto here
ReplyDeleteWell it's settled then. Laterite Mysorepak beats latest Mysorepa 3-0.
ReplyDeleteAin't this strange??? Not a single comment on yesterday's FINAL. It's like we're paying tribute to the state of Karnataka (.....mysore paks.... license plates....)
It's 4-0
ReplyDeleteVJ: Truth be said, yesterday's final was a damp squib. The game was rather maudlin and directionless most of the time. The solitary goal was also on the strength of a near off-side position. The play off for 3rd place was much more interesting, including a brilliant attack from Forlan.
ReplyDeleteA last one at FIFA's expense, based on the name of a German player:
One of our members incompletely follows being cooked in oil (9)
@ Rich: You are right, Oil izz not well !
The colour that dominated was not orange or red(wearing blue !) but yellow, what with the flow of cards.
ReplyDeleteKishore,
ReplyDeleteFriedrich - nice clue with reference to a poster on this blog!
An anticlimax: Wikipedia says MYSORE PAK was originally known as Masoor (Dhal) Pak and was made of Masoor dhal flour(Besan).
ReplyDeletePossibly it was popularized by the Mysore palace chefs and the name conveniently changed to Mysore Pak.
Well FRIEDRICH makes his second appearance.
ReplyDeleteI think the highlight of yesterday's final was De Jong's chest kick LOL.
2006 final: Head butt
2010 final: Chest kick
2014 final: ????
I don't know 2014, but upto now in all matches they have been kicking ****s.
ReplyDeleteWell, yesterday's play made me wish John McEnroe was around. The least he would have said is : "My blind grandma could have done better '.
A nice piece 'The Horn of Africa' in ET today.
Horn
Giri/VJ: Bingo
ReplyDeleteRichard: You star once again in 21.37:One of our members incompletely follows being cooked in oil (9)
FRIED-RICH(ard)

Better let the octopus fry than you, R.
