  1. Good morning

    Some very innovative clues.

Liked SH+ROUD, DA+SHING(-le), HAVE A GO, GLADDEN, DOVISH (this one took time), REINDEER (good one), MISSIVE (cute! Not MISS, but the clue), NEIGHS (good homophone with NAYS), OUTWARD, TEL AVIV (could get this at first glance, as a small country like Israel may not have another city with a 3,4 character pattern), RESIDUE, ORDAIN (brilliant!), OGRE (very nice one) etc.

    1D - UNDISTINGUISHED - awesome anagram.

    21D - a 'clever' anagrInd.

  2. Hi Deepak, just read your top comment. Opinions and tastes can differ.

  3. We have manned flights also going to outer space

  4. 10A - So, my take @ 08:30 as DA+SHING(-LE) looks OK.

  5. Probably G believes the moon landing conspiracy theory, and also that Soviet claims may be counter propaganda !

Only difference I had with Deepak's views is I took actress BB as Barbara Bach and not B Bardot. Agree Bardot is older.

  6. Plus too many CD's/DD's (some were brilliant though) which is always my crib, 11 as per my count

  7. There is some concern over Gridman's choice of clue word for DASHING.

SUAVE means bland, polite, of soft flavour (in the sense of being polished) while DASHING is generally used in the context of being spirited or showy (.e.g., he cut a dashing figure in his new suit.) I would not consider them as being synonymous.

  8. 6D HIGH BIRD? At first, I thought, HAWK BIRD but it HAWK didn't fit..

    1A is ambiguous.

    Like 15A a lot.

    7D and 17D were nice

    ReplyDelete
  9. 6d - high born i think, not high bird. didn't like dashing - definitely not a synonym for suave (almost an antonym, one would think)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Didn't quite get the origin of the last V in 19 D, is V connected to 'see' in any way?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Gridman is not wrong in DASHING as SUAVE leads to DEBONAIR leads to JAUNTY leads to DASHING

    ReplyDelete
  12. v. is an abbr. of L. vide, which means 'see'.
It is used in bibliographical references when the reader is asked to see some ref.

  13. near = stingy = tight = close = near

  14. Another Sandhya here! (8:46)
It's not me - the regular on the Orkut crossword forums.

  15. Re the def for DASHING, I think opinion may be divided as it is here indeed.
Think of the word OFFER in the innermost, smallest circle of some concentric circles.
The synonyms in the immediately near bigger circle will be bid, proposal, present, tender, proposition, invitation.
In the next larger or outer circle will be compromise, gift, suggest, overture.
In the outermost circle will be sale, bribe.
(Idea derived from Bradford: The guide to Solving Crosswords by B. J. Holmes, which has a graphic.)
I think 'suave' is in the outermost circle from 'dashing'.

  16. Got 3D as BLEATS (anagram of stables)and was wondering whether 'from the' can be an anagram indicator. And consequently struggled with the top left corner till I figured it out.

  17. Venkatesh,

I just saw your 2337 and 0005 post on yesterdays blog.

If all that is from your memory, brilliant. But in case you are copy pasting from somewhere please indicate the source and italicise such portions, as I don't want to be hauled up for hosting copyright violations

  18. Good morning all

I fully go with Col Deepaks' view. not an enjoyable offering. once again my view as Gridman do a NJ or Neyartha get "Slightly Tightenned" however I was gladdened by give a go for the longest undistinguished anagram in the first look itself. However I get a chop as Shrouded in an unmanned crossing a Dangerous corner. I felt outward the crossing as my Arms are pulled down by an attractor and got a black spot by filling up the residue. I became an ogre on seeing this ibex and idlessness settles in.

    Good day.

  19. Sandhya is right on 6D It should be HIGH BORN.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Kishore you are an ATTRACTOR for some serious competition!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Suresh
'from the' is a valid anag ind. So it's quite possible to get BLEATS from STABLE. But that was not G's intention as you discovered later.

    ReplyDelete
  22. HIGH BORN it is, as summed up by CV at the Orkut group

    ReplyDelete
  23. 'once again my view as Gridman do a NJ or Neyartha get "Slightly Tightenned" '

I am sorry I am unable to understand what Mathu means by this. Could he or someone help.

  24. Deepak
I think you need to delete 'Anno pending' against 26a as it appears to have dawned on you before you posted what you typed.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Deepak 1012: Fine, as long as it does not go 1A.

    ReplyDelete
  26. CV,
My interpretation is, Mathu means his views are 'slightly reinforced' about Gridman going the NJ and Neyartha way, I don't know though in which way he is equating NJ & Neyartha

    ReplyDelete
  27. Didn't get to solve today's puzzle 'cause had to leave home early. Having read the clues and annos here, don't think I can now go back and solve this crossword.

    13A: BB was nice.

10A: On checking the thesaurus entries for "suave" and "dashing," I found one common synonym for both the words i.e. "debonair." So I think it's all right

2D: I was under the impression that "teacher = miss" is an innocent kindergarten thing. After finishing elementary school, we stopped calling our teachers "miss." Could somebody throw some light on the usage?

    ReplyDelete
  28. VJ Your understanding of 'miss' is correct. It is a term used by children to address their female teachers. Nothing else

    ReplyDelete
  29. Miss/female teacher
If G uses it, it's recorded in Chambers.

  30. didn't get my paper today, so I re-created the grid on a graph paper and went ahead. For some reason, it felt very tedious today. Maybe my mood... I guess it doesn't feel the same unless I have the newspaper in my hand! :)

  31. Good afternoon

Normally I look for a pleasant soliving if it is from Sankalak or Gridman. Both NJ and Neyartha creates a little annoyance on my part by way of their creepy clueing and imaginative answers ( again i am referring the single/double word syndrome ). But Gridman by far most friendly took break intermittently to try giving us a puzzle a bit away from his usual self.

That is what i intended to mention...but thanks to this blog my understanding improved considerably...

Thanks once again... today i just try to do a kishore act...thats all...

by the way i am giving you the link of my blog...Just have a look at it and share your views.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Suresh, 1804 Sandhya is the one that came in late today. She's also the latest Sandhya. A profile check would clarify that.

    ReplyDelete
  37.
