  1. I thought there were several clues that were not so great today.

12Ac. meant CRAISES unless there was a removal ind. for A.

Several clues with interfering padding in the middle of anagram fodder - 14Ac "to" between around and smile, 24Dn "to have a" between out and ride, 28Ac "to" between try and pen parts of fodder. 28Ac also suffers from not having a insertion ind for "C", unless it is part of fodder and then it becomes an indirect anagram..3Dn has "Getting" with no articular cryptic purpose.

27Ac's ELICIT word play is confusing - Assuming Caught is CT, A is I and LIE is anagrammed, not sure what the anagram and insertion indicators are that make up the solution, unless "when" plays these roles.

23Ac.'s ETHER*{NET} has a somewhat dubious "is a way to" as anagram indicator and no obvious use for "use".

24Ac.'s EIDER is also missing an insertion indicator..

1Ac. has "takes" between sam and a car fodder pieces - technically I think when one does that there must be an anag indicator for sam and one for a car..

That said, 8D is my CoD.

As a corollary to your post, please see my comment in the Orkut community:THCS on the clue for ENCRYPT.

Your COD might well be set in a British milieu.

At home in India few of us dress up, few of us hear the dinner gong go before we climb down the stairs and are seated at a long table for the waiters to come and serve the dinner obsequiously as the patriarch of the family smiles benevolently at us from his chair.

  4. CV sir, Since the clue alluded to breakfast, I was thinking more of a sleepy, dishevelled, poorly dressed person quickly trying to put on something to be presentable for breakfast on a weekend with visiting friends - that made the cryptic solution for DRESSING funny for me.

  5. Breakfast or dinner, I think both of the imagined scenarios are quite vivid!

  6. I was out twice for '0'(read duck) today-one on top of the other!! (3d & 24d)They call it a 'golden pair' in cricket!I was reminded of CV's comment against repetition.

  8. @ Veer,

Rise can also be defined as an increase in salary. According to one of the dictionaries I referred, it is a British usage.

One other problem in today's puzzle. Word Photographer is redundant in 7 Across.

I don't like the word many being defined as C. It is vague.

  9. Enjoyed todays puzzle. Liked all except ELICIT. I dont think the surface would be good without photographer in 7 Down .

  10. Pretty good cw again today. I would have rated it at avg for both difficulty and nicety. But I rated them good and easy 'cos they were trending in that direction! :)
Like many others' thoughts voiced before mine, I REALLY liked many clues, but found a handful to be overcooked. :)

    Still... better than most. :)

My COD=> 21D : I didn't get this, but it was a very good one nonetheless.

    Cheers all.

  12. I suspected the Col. would mark 5A as a DD. Why isn't it just plain old E? Does "sound for reproduction" also mean records?

    Nit-picks follow:

Didn't like ETHERNET: do all working computers need ETHERNET?

28A: even if "messages" is taken as a verb, the answer should be ENCRYPTS.

As has been the case for the past few days, I place this grid in the "middle ground."

  13. @Navneeth:
5A: I had originally thought it was a DD, but now that I see your comment, it does have some merit.
