ReplyDeleteI think it is a triple definition.
Is Neyartha setting the (Indian) Census as the theme:
ReplyDeleteCENSUS
SEX RATIO
POPULATION DENSITY
LITERACY
If so, it has come right on the dot...
24 - Scouts run away as article gets misplaced with the cheap trinkets (5) - G(-u+a)A(-a+u)U(-r)DS
ReplyDeleteI thought G(+a)AU(-a)(-r)DS
i.e. only a moves after deletion of r and U sits tight since there is indication of article(a) getting misplaced and no mention of U doing anything.
I think you are right,Sandy. The max we seem to have got is 4 def for PORT. Anyone recall the clue?
ReplyDeleteKishore
ReplyDeleteLook at the clue anno this way:
Scouts - GUARDS
run away - GUA[r]DS
as
article - A
gets misplaced - GUADS becomes GAUDS
with the
cheap trinkets - def
@ Kishore:
ReplyDeleteRight, that was the intended theme. It is a relief to see the theme being identified without my intervention :)
Surprisingly, I wasn't aware that the crossword publication month would co-incide with the Indian census, since the grid fills were done early last year.

ReplyDeleteAlec Robins in the book 'Teach Yourself Crosswords' cites this clue:
Determined company of dancers decline to become rigid and formal (3)
Thanks Sandhya,
ReplyDeleteIhad meant to put in DD but typed CD by oversight. I think I will shall Incorporate a new Anno, MD for Multiple Definition!
21a-lead led me the wrong way for a long long time.Is it supposed be taken as 'lead in Cadmium yellow' meaning 'cy'? I also had doubts about literacy being synonymous with intelligence.
ReplyDeleteRE 21a
ReplyDeleteLook at it as
lead in Cadmium - C
yellow - Y
The question of symbol for Cadmium doesn't arise.
Thanks CV,
ReplyDeleteI took lead as indictor for the mixed 'alert & I' to be ahead of 'C & Y'
CV 849: That is exactly what I said. There is no indication or need to shift the U.
ReplyDeleteSET
ReplyDeleteDetermined
company of dancers
decline to become
rigid and formal
May be I can split rigid and formal into two separate def.s ?
