Hi,
ReplyDeleteWe remembered the Scottie Buster a couple of days back. Now we remember his master Fatty starring in the Mystery of the Missing Letters:
13a BRING COAL*=LOG CABIN + where r gone?
31a GROCERIES-RICE+S= GROSS+ where e gone?
20a STENTORIAN my cod. Did not like 9d, 25d, 20d
6 - Gathering of people for a military meal in the rear of the British company at the end of the day (8) - {A}{SSEM<-}{B}{L}{Y} How is company and 'L' connected?
ReplyDeleteMay be Limited as in limited liability :-)
Kishore @ 8:37
ReplyDeleteR has gone outside
On NJ days I think we need to have WCOD (Worst Clue of the day) instead of COD so that one has a tough time to pick one
ReplyDeleteDG 837 OMG
ReplyDeleteDG 847 A tough choice either way, lack of candidates for COD and too many aspirants for WCOD
6 - Gathering of people for a military meal in the rear of the British company at the end of the day (8) - {A}{SSEM<-}{B}{L}{Y} How is company and 'L' connected?
ReplyDeleteBL = British Leyland?
WCOD:
ReplyDelete9 - A flautist (6) - FLUTER
31A I don't think Rice means removal of any letters. Without the rice bit the clue sounds fine as a homophone. Maybe if you pronounce 'rice' as rees you would get a deleted homophone too.
ReplyDeleteAm I making sense?
Suresh @ 8:53,
ReplyDeleteYou really do get weird thoughts on NJ days!! You will have to pronounce 'rice' as 'eries' in that case to get your answer
My remark elsewhere was something akin to the above observation of Deepak.
ReplyDeleteThe -ries in 'groceries' is not pronounced 'rice'.
Suresh 853: No, right now you dont. But try your luck after a few years when I enlist into the loony bin and may be I will understand it better. ;-)
ReplyDeleteSaid initially I took to mean the first part of groceries sounds like gross. I ignored the rice part of the phrase.
ReplyDeleteEven if I removed the letters rice I got groes, which incidentally would when pronounced sound like gross.
Actually I think the clue was meant as a homophone and NJ got over excited and mucked up with the rice thing
If you search for BL in Wikipaedia one of the expansions given is British Leyland. they don't say AL for Ashok Leyland. But TELCO and TISCO are common. BL must be a common abbr for British Leyland. Not that I like its usage in the clue, but it is passable.
ReplyDeleteNJ probably had a bad dining experience in a military establishment and decided to call it a mess.:))
Actually, I quite enjoyed today's CW, with and for all its oddities
ReplyDeleteWonderful clue in the Telegraph:
ReplyDelete7d Informal ballot gets Labour politician c-cut up (5,4)
Remembered Wile E. Coyote.
ReplyDeleteGood morning
ReplyDeleteI ve given up after half an hour. The intial euphoria of getting some words died after some heavey scratches in my head.
5 d timid creature...i thought deer being reversed as taking cuts back as reversal indicator.
without knowing anno some words just got filled up on its own.
with great reluctance i could pick 18 D as COD.
24 a 6d and 12d as wcod..,..though i got all.
mathu
Good morning Col
ReplyDeleteThe second part is not visible the one below quality/difficulty...though i could mark the status is not there?
is that a problem with my system?
mathu.
Mathu,
ReplyDeleteThere is no second part below Quality/Difficulty it's all in one line
Tks col.
ReplyDeletethere might be some error in my system...i saw a duplication of boxes..thats y the query.
tks
mathu.
Quick post while on the move : Looks like I couldn't have chosen a better time to be on vacation even if I had deliberately planned it.

ReplyDelete@Deepak, must compliment you on your perseverance in solving NJ's Crosswords. I give up after a few minutes to preserve my sanity
ReplyDelete13A reminds me of a silly maths joke, and since there are at least a few here who dabble in that sort of thing, here goes:
ReplyDeleteWhat is this?
Int dx . 1/x=log x + c
ReplyDeleteHence, given term = log cabin + c
i.e. a seaside log cabin
I do not know if you intended the sea to come into this, but I thought why leave out the constant.

ReplyDeleteIf the sea was unintended, it wouldn't be a silly joke, would it? ;-)

ReplyDeleteEither way, with or without the sea, both of us agree it is a rea-lly sea-lly joke ;-)
