Hi
ReplyDelete2 - His widow no longer has to keep his dinner hot (4,7) - LATE HUSBAND
pun or dd for the word 'late'=dead, behind expected time
Kishore
ReplyDeleteBefore I saw your Comment and before you saw mine, I have posted one on the very same clue in the Orkut community: THCS.
And I have posted an addendum there...
ReplyDelete28 - In all probability he was fired in anger (3) - IRE [T]
ReplyDeleteAgree that it is a hidden word and hence a slight amount of padding is allowed to make the clue read better. But there is more padding than words for the cryptic reading! I assume that the first "In" in the clue is the hidden word indicator with the second "in" serving as the linkword to def. and we are supposed to get IRE from "all probability he was fired". A bit much, I must say.

ReplyDeleteI too paused over the clue/solution (as you know, I don't solve THC of certain composers).
I don't say the clue for IRE is bad but you have aptly pointed out the muchness in it.
Certainly, it does not have the finesse that we find in the clue 14dn Determined attempt to get utter sot off rum (5,6) STOUT EFFORT and a couple of other clues for long words/phrases.
No doubt there is a master in their provenance.
CV Sir: Thx for the comment. I am sure you paused over the lameness of Leonora - I could not believe that the entire answer was given gratis.
ReplyDelete29 - Leo and Nora both join up to meet her (7) - {LEO}{NORA}
Actually it still brought a smile because it reminded of a masterpiece clue that is one of my all time top 5 - I am sure you will recognize the setter. I think the clue goes like this:

ReplyDelete22d-Is 'as' a standard abbreviation fro across?
Padmanabhan
ReplyDeleteTo answer your query.
Just now I had a look at the relevant clue.
AS is not even a non-standard abbr. for across. Pathetic, I would say.
Readers are invited to write clue for any word of their choice but wordplay exactly smilar to LEONORA.
ReplyDeleteThe clue would be considered acceptable only in this exercise and is not be taken as a model for a full-fledged crossword worthy of publication.
I am sure you paused over the lameness of Leonora
ReplyDeleteVeer, no, I didn't.
For the simple reason that I didn't do the crossword.
Any comment of mine follows another here.
