Getting the clues is getting tougher by the day. The paper is still not up at The HINDU website! I'm not going to subscribe for an e-paper, if this goes on I will find it difficult to meet my 8:30 deadline.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to our new setter ARDEN.
Best of the new lot for me - at least going by the 3 puzzles.
ReplyDelete@Col : I know what you mean. I get to do the puzzle if and when Veer posts them on the orkut community. I might subscribe to the e-paper too.
ReplyDeleteThanks to Veer I didn't have to do a lot of typing.
ReplyDelete@Arden: Great crossword! Keep them coming.
ReplyDeleteQuoting Kishore's limerick from the Orkut group

With the coming of a new setter spree,
I note with interest and open glee,
The toughness harden.
Welcome, dear Arden,
But I wonder are there only these three?
I hazard no guesses this time. ;-)

I am glad at the welcome given to new setters.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that in India we don't have good setters; it's a question of the paper being ready to entertain them instead of being stuck with mediocrity.
I think Scintillator was the best of the lot. Arden's style is similar to Sankalak's and probably a notch above in level of difficulty.
ReplyDeleteGood morning all. Delighted to see new setters. Welcome Arden. The question is whose quota has been cut ?
ReplyDeleteRaghunath: Yes I too found Arden's style similar to Sankalak's - easy yet quite enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteRefreshing to see The Hindu introducing a set of new CW setters, with standard cluing. Hope they follow through and eliminate the non-quality setters.
ReplyDeleteBhavan@8.34, does that mean that you are not 'Buzzer'? I thought you implicitly acknowledged that it was you.
To me Arden (though too early to call, this is his first Crossie)is a cut above Sankalak. No cryptic clues and all clues have some wordplay to work out the answers.
Hi all! Me back to TH after a long time. Hope Col and the regulars like Kishore and Richard are doing fine. Pleasantly surprised to find the barrage of new setters.
ReplyDeleteSomehow I found the going tough today. Partly because I was rusty, but also the cluing was not very fair, I thought, especially given it's someone newly recruited. For eg., 'girl' appears in 4 different places, standing for some arbitrary English names. BTW, English appears in consecutive places for the same E.
The definitions are unclear in 1D, 3D. A lot of words in many clues do not participate in the wordplay at all. Even 1A is incorrect, the word having MAN and NUDE dancing together, rather than one around the other.
I 'fourth' the opinion that Arden's style is quite Sankalakian.
ReplyDelete@Vikram: I thought guessing who the setter was from a given pseudonym was just a fun game??
ReplyDeleteAssuming the new setters butted into the existing cycle, it will be Spiffytrix tomorrow right?
Good to see Sudalamani back after a long time. Maybe she can use her detective skills to find out who the new setters are
ReplyDeleteI 'fifth' the opinion that Arden's style is quite Sankalakian.I enjoyed solving.
ReplyDeleteDeepak, taking liberty with a bit of jargon here, it appears that some recognize 'the fist' as we used to call it in Morse days. Metamorphosis?
ReplyDeleteThanks Sudalamani for remembering me. I am not a regular here nowadays because of my harrowing work schedule in the mornings.
ReplyDeleteSuresh, Sandhya and others: Planning to be in Cyberabad with wifey around August 13 and 15. Any plans for S&B? Wish Bhavan could decide to join...I know it would be far-fetched for him.
We already had RAM(an) aur SHYAM. Wonder what is in store for tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteAll fine, Sudalamani. Thanks for the enquiry. Like Richard, I too am usually tied up with other things and my timing here is pretty erratic.
ReplyDeleteVenktaesh 2057:
ReplyDeleteAtsahbeshlegai?
That is perilously close to 'Ich liebe dich', Kishore. What on earth is that?
ReplyDeleteThe new setters are refreshingly enjoyable and exhilarating. It is a welcome move by the Hindu to give opportunity to new setters and revamp our minds out of the mishmash created by those who merely fill in the words and let us 'justify'the result.

Richard @20:00 I'd have really loved to join but the meeting is happening at least 6 months too early for my liking :)
ReplyDeleteYes, RU, one feels bad when answers have to lead to clues instead of the other way round.
ReplyDeleteLet's not be too harsh on these newcomers or new avatars of old compilers. I agree there are too many niggling errors in today's crossword but we do get to see some new words, which I have'nt come across earlier;that helps in our learning curve. Like ASTRAGAL.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see so many comments, which means these compilers do provoke, beguile and tease the solvers. A good departure from the regular and familiar ones. More the merrier.!!
How about a get-together in Coimbatore of the solvers?
