Delete"take" can be an insertion indicator (as intended in the clue) but it can also be a deletion. In which case A taken for B means B replaces A, and the answer becomes SMUGGLED. In the absence of crossings, there is no way to verify if solving on paper. Bit ambiguous IMHO
Right I put down SMUGGLED. But for the NINA it has to be N
DeleteI see your point though, as Suresh mentioned, the NINA did provide a crossing to confirm. There was an additional constraint on clueing due to the Clue Acrostic - I normally like to keep the fodder in-between to avoid confusion but missed out in this.
DeleteCongratulations on 150 puzzles Hypatia!
ReplyDeleteAND is also hidden in the grid (HUNDRED AND FIFTY)
ACHIEVEMENT and SATISFIED also nina words!
And to cap it all, there is a clue acrostic - pick 1st letters of all clues (across followed by down)!
👍🏻. Great observation!

OMG
DeleteThank you Ramki :) Feels good.
DeleteGreat! One may call it thened
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on a rare ACHIEVEMENT!
ReplyDelete150th CW - truly an EVENT !
Thank you Sridhar.
Delete27A. AYES = positive responses
ReplyDeleteNOTICES = EYES (Homophone of
AYES (auditor's homo indicator)
Hearty congratulations Hypatia for a very ‘thoughtful’ crossword. I don’t know what jubilee we can call it!! Keep going. 👏👏
ReplyDeleteThanks Surendra. Interesting that you should ask - I had initially thought of using "sesquicentennial" in the clue acrostic and even wrote a few clues. Later, I felt that it probably works only for "150 years" and not necessarily for the 150th in a series and is also a bit obscure -so decided to keep the message simple.
DeleteCongratulations to Hypatia on the remarkable achievement💐💐
ReplyDeleteThanks Ramchandran
DeleteCongratulations Hypatia. To quote you, "With 150 as Hypatia, 27 as Enigmaya, 123 crosswords for the Hindu Businessline and cryptics for my blog and books, I have had over 300 cryptic crosswords published as on date.
ReplyDeleteThe Hindu Businessline crosswords were weekly so that milestone took only 2 years plus. The Hindu milestone has taken over 6 years and feels sweeter :)"
Thank you Vasant. Indeed. God has been kind.
DeleteHappy to note the total score!
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteVladimir felt satisfied with his ACHIEVEMENT. His MIND was filled with joy.
ReplyDeleteHe went with his NIECE to the crackers shop. EVENT being diwali celebrations.
"Give me a 150 walla"
"Sorry Sir. We can give you a 1000 walla"
"That's BAD. Can you ask someone to convert into six 150 and one hundred walla??"
"Sir...."
What happened next?
Well.. the 151st cracker -which is out today:) Nice to see Vladimir appearing in my 150th puzzle post. Fondly remembering Gridman who always encouraged and guided me and other setters for The Hindu.
