  1. Another characteristically Sankalakesque puzzle. Some impressive anagrams and anagrinds. Just iffy about a very few annotations like 27A and 4D. Will have to check up in the blog.

Perhaps just one of those rare puzzles that did not contain 15-letter anagrams.

  2. I had 16A as {SUB}{ORDER} Standby = SUB, Arrangement = ORDER

  3. One more classic from the CW maestro ! It was music all the way !! Missed out on 3 Down. I put it as ROOTS.

    1. It is ROOTS<= STOOR is a variant spelling of STOUR

    2. Typo : STOOR (Back Bases being ROOTS)

    4. Great!
I did not have any 'liability' and was doubtful about Bunyan.

    5. Sorry if this sounds gender-biased. But it is for real. I had read a small poster in a bachelor's mess:

The greatest asset of a girl is her lie-ability. Lie is a fib, I presume.

      Delete
    6. Lie can also be a variant of 'lay'. Interpret it as you want, at your own risk. But remember the French ....

    7. I am no expert on that, I am just a lay man

  4. And 18A as {A}{B}{STRA<=}{C}{T}

  5. I wonder what the French tenants do with their letters...

French tenants first adore their letters and then the latter adorn the former.

    1. I think that should be

    3. Remembered an old limerick I had come across long ago. The wording may not be accurate.

      Ladies inhabiting the planet Venus

      To get some men here
And nothing but space is between us'

  7. Pardon me for going off-track:

The comment against 27A reminded of an anecdote from my journalistic fraternity, which I often love to narrate at parties:

A man, at the celebration of his golden wedding anniversary, was interviewed by a journalist, .

One of the questions was as to what the secret of the success of such a long married life was.

'So simple. We have had an understanding that all major decisions would be taken by me, and all minor decisions will be hers,' said the guy.

The journo got curious. 'What are the minor decisions that your wife takes, for example?'

The man replied, 'Oh, those simple ones like what car we should buy, what kind of furniture and fixtures to be had, what food we have every day, what kind of friends we should have, the kind of restricted circle of friends we should visit, so on and so forth.'

'And what are the major decisions you take, may I ask?'

'Oh, they are really the ones that matter. I take decisions as to whether the US should nuke Iran, whether Putin should continue, if troubled Middle Eastern states should be taken over by the UN....and many others.'

    1. Piano in music is also used as a direction to play softly, so an instruction to the player

      Delete
    2. It also goes further as pianissimo or play very softly. Both are used by setter to clue in P as against F for fortissimo or play hard (to get?)

    3. Thank you Col. & Kishore. This is the reason for using P for soft in CW?

    1. And just yesterday I was recalling a motor cycle mechanic (a Bullet specialist) near Minerva Circle who starts work in the morning with in sparkling white banian (pants too, but not white) goes to get his hands grimy by the evening, but the banian remains curiously sparkling white.

    2. Grease monkey? Probably he keeps wiping his hands on his pants only, but not on the banian.

    1. It is the same thing, MB. I try to use the same container/anagram/deletion indicator as given in the clue. Further, using RED as I have used can help a newcomer to link it to socialist.
