It could be S(LIP)UP. Just a guess. Nothing else seems to fit in there.
As for the rest, some were easy, and a few others tricky. But managed to complete the crossword by 7-30 am IST. It is, of course, subject to Deepak-sir's final stamp of veracity.
Incidentally, the word 'may' appears in 4 places in this grid. 'May'be it is a favourite word of the compiler?
The word CYME was new to me. The dict def is: "any sympodial inflorescence, the main shoot ending in a flower, the subsequent flowers growing on successive lateral branches." Now, what does 'sympodial' mean? Again, we have to turn to the dict. sympodial growth: "a pattern of growth in which a shoot ceases to grow and one or more of the lateral buds next to the apical bud grow(s) out and repeat(s) the pattern."
In international blogs on crosswords the following convention exists: where a blog cannot be posted by a particular member within specified time, commenters can discuss the crossword while the main blog remains to be written. The mice will play while Sylvester is away.
Def if 'cyme' in the Oxford Dictionary of English is simpler 'a flower cluster with a central stem bearing a single terminal flower that develops first, the other flowers of the cluster developing as terminal buds of lateral stems'
Hi Suresh & Richard, Glad to see a lively debate in my absence, there is no need for asking for any pardon, you are welcome to use this blog for discussion on the CW. I have since posted the answers Chaturvasi, Thanks for stepping in

ReplyDeleteThanks Suresh, Slap-up seems to be the correct answer.
ReplyDeleteRichard
'yes' is for the letter 's'. Again, it is my own guess.
ReplyDeleteRichard
Raptor is a large eagle type bird.Rapt and or(for gold.
ReplyDeleteYou are probably right on your reasoning on 1A. Yes could be S
ReplyDeleteIn 1ac I think S is derived from 'yes'.

25ac SLAP-UP is correct, of course. LAP in SUP, both as verbs meaning 'drink'.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chaturvasi-sir.
ReplyDeleteDeepak-sir, Suresh and I had a field day on your blog in your absence. Trust you will pardon us for this bit of indulgence.

ReplyDeleteSee if the following link to an illustration of 'cyme' works:

If the url is copy-pasted in the address bar of the browser and Enter is pressed, it works.
