  1. 22a is admittedly a mistake, discovered by you.
Not that Gridman would not have looked up. He must have seen "cuckoo pint" at the beginning of a long def in an online dict and must have jumped to the conclusion that it was a small-sized cuckoo!
He owes an apology to you and all solvers.

  2. A couple of months ago a blogger discovered a mistake in a published Guardian crossword; the compiler, the author of a well-touted book on crosswords, tendered his apology and also explained how that mistake happened: because of indistinguishment between i (where the space below the dot gets smudged in certain bold types) and l in the small font.
The Guardian has a crossword editor, I believe. How the mistake escapesd him I don't know.

  3. While browsing the net I also found that Wake-Robin is the name of a book by John Burroughs regarding birds

  4. It appears that the flower gets its name from the fact that it blooms at a time when migratory birds such as robins appear.

  5. Two fifty-ones in the same grid??

"Yale’s Yale" looked exciting on the surface but the answer was underwhelming to me. That's like saying "Tata's Tata" = JRD. I'll
probably class 11A and 16D as your new type [E] rather than CD.

BLOCKADE, ENTOURAGE and little one ITEM made up for the not-so-great moments, thankfully.

  6. Shuchi, you are right about 11A and 16D, I forgot about my E classification today.
Gridman had scope for two more fifty-ones in 11A and 23D

  7. 17 A - Can you affect a cleanup without this? (5,4) - DIRTY WORK [CD]

"Affect" is to have a negative effect. Here the clue should have been "effect', and not "affect", I guess.

    Over to experts.

  8. Sorry, please read it as 17 D and not 17 A.

    Thanks

  9. Richard,
You're right! That was a misprint for which the blame goes to the subeditors.
