  1. Good morning everyone

    Today's crossword was a geography student's delight, or was it a scourge?

    11D - Marathon participant was, eventually (2,3,4,3) – IN THE LONG RUN [DD]

    Having initially put it down as ON THE LAST LAP because of the the running involved, I got stuck for a while.

    7D - Furtive and sly at the resort (8) – STEALTHY* Last to fall was foxed by resort, which is the Anagram indicator here, was all the time thinking of a holiday resort!

    Deepak, on the contrary, I hit upon the anagram just on surface reading. Having run this blog almost without a break on a daily basis for so long, you don't surprise us if you felt that way. You badly need a holiday, boss !

    8D - Film director crosses out name, finally (8) – {SCORSES*}{E}

    This is only one that eluded me.

    20D - The HEARSE has re-surfaced !

  2. Hi Richard,
    You are lucky that the intended meaning of resort struck you at the first reading while I was unlucky. It always happens that the first meaning of a word that strikes you gets embedded in the mind and everything revolves around that meaning. Best thing in such cases is to leave the CW for a while and come back again.

  3. 3 - Place between Bury Post Office and southern end of avenue (9) – {INTER}{PO}{S}{E}

    Nice play with words, good enough to hoodwink anyone.

    12 - Opening of Coward musical - seat required (5) – {C}{HAIR}

    And this as well. The first thing one would look for is a musical by Noel Coward !

    Richard

  4. That is a useful tip, Deepak. I would keep it in mind.

  5. A very easy one this time. Was able to complete all.
    16 Dn should be man (ERIC) harbouring SOT and E
    {E(SOT)(E)RIC)} meaning mysterious
    23 AC ER(A)SE was good
    Erse ois Irish form of Celtic (Gaelic)
    I got 25Dn Trap Door, then found it was DD.

    Lots and lots of anagrams and DDs, a solver's delight.

  6. "8D - Film director crosses out name, finally (8) – {SCORSES*}{E}

    This is only one that eluded me. "

    It just took me a second to figure this one out. I think you badly need some movie time, Richard. LOL.

  7. ...a geography student's delight?

    Richard,

    Wait for a crossword that is to appear some seven weeks later. You can again revel in geography!

  8. @ Dan

    My erratic working hours hardly afford me any movie time. Would you believe I have not watched many movies during the past decade? The only names that come to mind are TITANIC and DEVDAS. Maybe, I need a break too !

  9. @Venkatesh,

    Mysterious man, holding up boozer, is after key

    Mysterious = Definition
    man = ERIC
    holding up = position indicator
    boozer = SOT
    is after = position indicator
    key = E

    man holding up boozer = {SOT}{ERIC}

    man holding up boozer is after key = {E}{SOT}{ERIC}

    To keep you engaged for a while (if you have time to spare, that is!) here I take recourse to Gridman's clues over the past several years, clues in which he uses 'resort' one way or the other.

    Culled from my dB of the setter's clues.

    Solving some of them cold may be hard, but for any latter ones I will give some hints later.

    Resort to a massage among the abstainers (5)

    Move out of cave at resort (6)

    King uppish about dance in Maldives resort (7)

    Vast is the holiday resort, to begin with (8)

    Criminal resorts (9)

    Need cynic resort to filth? (9)

    Finding he’s in a low resort can be sticky (8)

    A country that lacks spirit may have to resort to this (6,9)

    Writers resort to it by mistake (6)

    Assemble again at a holiday place? (6)

    Fish I’ve found in Wales resort (8)

  13. Richard, seriously!!!

    Just the opposite of mine.

  14. @CVasi sir,

    I got the last five:
    Finding he’s in a low resort can be sticky (8) AD{HES}IVE

    A country that lacks spirit may have to resort to this (6,9) PETROL RATIONING

    Writers resort to it by mistake (6) ERASER

    Assemble again at a holiday place? (6) RESORT

    Fish I’ve found in Wales resort (8) ALEWIVES

  15. I too don't have time to watch movies.
    The problem is I am not one who can do two things at a time, leave alone ashtavadhanam.
    There are people who let the movie run on the TV while they are writing browsing the/a ... (what, I leave it to you to fill in).
    If I have to watch a movie I must allot the time required - which I am not able to do.
    Well, in my time, when I was a student, I have seen movies. Some of them unforgettable:
    Cleopatra, A Farewell to Arms, Charade, Fanny, Far fom the Madding Crowd, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Stalag 47, The Great Escape, Mackenna's Gold...
    These films are memorable in another way. Most of these were seen with friends at a theatre complex in Madras when multiplexes were unheard of and where there was a theatre which had continuous runs.
    To add a nostalgic tinge to this, that theare buidling has been razed to the ground.
    But nothing has come up there as subsequent buyers including a top political party in singara Chennai feel that the plot is hexed.

  16. I got VACATE, INDECENCY and RESORT

    ReplyDelete
  17. I must add that if I want to see a movie I go to the theatre.
    I have booked seats for 'Vinaithandi varuvya' tomorrow. I also plan to see 'Tamil Padam'.
    I don't go to English movies any more. I don't enjoy them as I used to do in the past.

  18. Excellent clues with 'resort':

    King uppish about dance in Maldives resort (7) (K)(U)RUMBA

    Resort to a massage among the abstainers (5)A(RUB)A – massage-RUB in AA (Alcoholics Anonymous)

    Move out of cave at resort (6) VACATE (cave at*)

    Vast is the holiday resort, to begin with (8)(SPA)CIOUS

    Need cynic resort to filth? (9) INDECENCY (need cynic*)

    Criminal resorts (9) may be GANGLANDS

  19. Multitasking while watching a movie... Well that's blasphemous!

    ReplyDelete
  20. How do you get PETROL RATIONING?

    ReplyDelete
  21. DROSS Was in the answers in the ET CW of Friday, last:

    17 What’s held back by shyness or dignity is worth nothing (5)DROSS<- [T]

    ReplyDelete
  22. @dan

    This is a straight clue. 'SPIRIT' in this case stands for PETROL. A country having shortage of petrol has to resort to PETROL RATIONING

    ReplyDelete
  23. We had another 'resort' clue from Gridman earlier this month (6th March) - THC:
    Model of one Kent resort (5)

    And one of Nita Jaggi's some months back:
    Pass by the Spanish resort taken up by an English (6).

  24. 14A Horse has been abbreviated to H. I don't see this as a standard abbreviation. Or am I missing something?

    ReplyDelete
  25. 'horse' is a street name for 'heroin'.
    'horse' is not abbreviated to H but 'heroin' is.
    So horse = heroin = H.
