Hi everybody
ReplyDeleteSome nice clues and cute anagrams.
Really liked ALCHEMIST, TRUNCHEON, PHEASANT, DRACULA and a few others.
11D - nice play with 'head' and 'ness'.
14D - FAST BOWLER - quite an intelligent one.
26D - Nice reference to the old saying, 'Great oaks grow from little acorns'.
However, my grouses:
15A - Phrases like 'with a view to', 'looking forward to' etc. should always be followed by a noun or noun clause.
'With a view to improvement / improving' is grammatically correct. Similarly, the oft-used 'looking forward to see you' is wrong, while 'to seeing you' is correct.
30A - The clue 'revolutionary' is singular, while ANARCHISTS is plural. But maybe the setter can justify it with the plural in 'arch-saints'.

ReplyDelete12 Ac should be PARTERRE and not PATTERRE
A parterre is a formal garden construction on a level surface consisting of planting beds, edged in stone or tightly clipped hedging, and gravel paths arranged to form a pleasing, usually symmetrical pattern.
12 Ac: This should be classified as E and not CD as it is a straight definition (easy type clue)
ReplyDeletetruncheon is a broken spear or lance. This is the dictionary meaning.
ReplyDeleteThanks Venkatesh,
ReplyDeleteThat was a typo from my side
The answer to 23A really confused me ... I was like, "what's going on here, Omaha and beach?" Then realized it had nothing to do with Omaha, NE. Had never heard of Omaha beach before. Link helped!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I got a question.
How is Coin = P??
Can u pls explain 1A someone how is daily help CHAR??
ReplyDelete@Dan
ReplyDeleteP = Pence
@Vikram
CHAR is short for CHARWOMAN, ie a woman employed as a cleaner, such women are also known as daily help
Vikram, hope this helps.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thefreedictionary.com/charwoman
charwoman = char = A woman hired to do cleaning or similar work, usually in a large building.
I had no clue either. Had to google to figure out the definition.
CHAR appears quite frequently in CW's
ReplyDelete@ Bangalore-based THC fans:
ReplyDeleteIt was so nice to know from some recent posts that THC solvers from Chennai are serious about getting together very soon.
I have plans to be in Bangalore sometime between March 24 and 28. It will be my privilege to meet Colonel Gopinath again.
Besides, I will be more than happy to meet other solvers in and around Bangalore at a common place.
Suggestions if any by email to RICHLAS (AT) GMAIL (DOT) COM - all in lower case, without spaces, please.

HAPPY UGADI AND GUDI PADWA TO ALL READERS
ReplyDeleteThanks Col Gopinath that was real helpful and is
ReplyDeleteStudy = CON always??
Thanks again Dan
ReplyDeleteHi Col,
ReplyDeleteCan u explain 16D...especially {D} & {E}. Does it refer to musical notes? or does it refer to dollar & euro? or is there something i am missing?
@Vikram,
ReplyDeleteNot always, sometimes CON can mean crook also. You could also have DEN for study.
@tpa
D & E are musical notes the other notes being A, B, C, F & G
29 a singular stag should have been used instead of plural, in my opinion
ReplyDelete29A - The plural of 'deer' is 'deer' and not 'deers'. So STAGS = DEER is perfectly in order.
ReplyDeleteRichard
26d.The clue would have been better if the answer was 'mighty oaks'

A week or so, prior to the operation, a crossword puzzle by a crazy professor appeared inThe Daily telegraph, wherein, 8 answers were the 8 codewords for the attack planned by the Allied forces!!The Secret Service was shocked.GeneralEisenhower cammanded an enquiry.Omaha is one beachhead in Nrmandy, where Gl.Bradly's men suffered murderous opposition resulting in huge casualities.
