ReplyDelete@Sembhayya,
ReplyDeleteSee the link provided with NONET for its meaning, secondly a trapeze artist in a circus is in danger if he performs without a net (no net)
Thanks Colonel. Its a wonderful clue!
ReplyDeleteGood Morning, Col. & all
ReplyDeleteRegarding 23D: If Flower can mean river, Bloomer be flower, jabber for one throwing punches and so on, one can be forgiven for "Singer" to be an "Informer", IMHO.
20D: I am not very well versed in Hindi (to put it mildy) but is "tea" known as "chai" or "cha" or both? I was wondering how Gridman used "doesn't finish" as the indicator for both "DAD" and "CHAI" and was thinking that was unfair. But, it looks like almost everyone else knows tea as cha.
It was nice to do a clear puzzle today. Loved 25D and 17D, small words but very nice clues, I thought.
Good morning Colonel,
ReplyDeleteAgreed that to Sing means to inform, but Singer as informer?
I think it's all right in cryptic parlance, just as butter = ram and flower = river. Perhaps a ? would have made it fairer?
It's fine by me even as it is.
Hi Col sir,
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely loved today's offering. My favs
5A ( LOL stuff)
32 A - Director's special made me think of the whisky and made me smile. Am sure Gridman also had that in mind.
19D - great anagram.
@Veer,
ReplyDeleteCHA and CHAI are both correct one can always say 'Ek cup cha or Ek cup chai' both will fetch you a cup of tea.
Interestingly CHA means Tea in Chinese see the link CHA FOR TEA
Dear, SCORCH has an thesarous meaning "'SINGE" WITH eXTREMELY uLTERIOR ie; r it is singer
ReplyDeleteGood morning, can somebody explain me anno for 17D please
ReplyDelete@Krishnan:
ReplyDeleteHere is the Anno (reflects the Col.'s thinking in the solution as well)
Bad = EVIL
First to last: Indicator to move first letter of "EVIL" to the end (so move the "E" in "EVIL" to after the "L"), thus creating "VILE"
bad = definition = VILE
Thanks Veer.
ReplyDelete9A:
ReplyDeleteModel = "T"?
Could somebody explain?
Model T Ford Model T
ReplyDelete@Dan:
ReplyDeleteModel = "T"?
[b]automobile - Ford Model T
@Colonel: How do I delete a post?
ReplyDeleteA small dustbin will be visible after the date and time at the bottom of your post click on that and the post will get deleted
ReplyDeleteAnno for 14d beta please, how is beta star?
ReplyDeleteHi Richard,
ReplyDeleteIf you are around, your linguistic skills are required for the post preceeding this. Last time you translated some Chinese or was it Japanese?
@Sumitra,
ReplyDeleteCheck out this link to read about stellar designation Bayer Designation
Somehow the word Producer sat on my mind the moment I saw 32A. Because he gives money to the director! Was wondering about the significance of 'special' in the clue. And also 2 crossings worked in favor. Hmmmm..
ReplyDeleteSpecial is the anagram indicator
ReplyDelete@ colonel, thank u
ReplyDeleteHi Deepak
ReplyDeleteSorry I was away on a short travel schedule and happened to log in for the day just now.
The post you mention has apparently been removed by now. Only the following appears at the moment.

Hey, I usually solve anagram type clues without difficulty but didn't know there was something like an anagram indicator. Could you please explain?
ReplyDeletereally refreshing and rejuvenating! after the suffering at the hands of NJ, it is a real breath of fresh air!
ReplyDeletethe standard of gridman is good; clues are crisp and succinct.
ReplyDeleteSOCCER - really good!
ReplyDelete@Dan
ReplyDeleteAnagram indicators could be many,for example in today's CW following are the anagram indicators
17A - out
21A - coming round
24A - broke
32A - special
2D - about
8D - transfer
19D - somehow
I suggest you visit Shuchi's blog 'Crossword Unclued' the link to which is available on the left hand side panel of this blog. You will get a lot of info there on Cryptic CW's.
colonelji, how many setters are there and at what frequency they change duties?
ReplyDeleteHi Deepak
ReplyDeleteThe Japanese post appears clearly on my laptop. It is gibberish. Its English translation goes like this:

There is a reference to Malabu. I don't know what it means. Will do a Google search. Looks like someone has taken a fascination for your blog.:-)
Richard
@ vck - possibly you started visiting this site recently. The Colonel has received this query several times over and each time he has given the answer very patiently.
ReplyDeleteFrom what he has told us, I remember the sequence as follows, with the number of days in parentheses: Gridman (6), M. Manna (7), Neyartha (2), Sankalak (6) and Nita Jaggi (10).
The following link to Shuchi's blog might be of interest you:

Hello Colonel and the team,
ReplyDeleteVinod here.
Ever since I read the feature on THC in the Hindu, I've got really HOOKED!
It's interesting to study each clue with the threadbare analysis that you provide.
It has rekindled my interest in Crossword solving.
Cheers!

No matter without science, without a moment instead of school, no one without studying.
This appears to be a quote by Song Dynasty's Zhu Xi(1130-1200): 'No matter without science, without a moment rather than science, the road to success is also'. His teachings gave a boost to neo-Confucianism. He took up the project or renovate Li Bo's White Deer Academy in Lushan's eastern hills,which later became a Confucian Mecca to rival Buddhist temples and Daoist belvederes.
