ReplyDeletePaddy, you are flying solo. May I be your wingman?
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by to say hello. Is everyone on a Manna-hartal?
ReplyDelete12a: "he's..." looks like "he is..." on the surface but can be read as "he has given an award" to match the answer.
Shuchi,
ReplyDeleteYes I too was surprised at the poor response today.
Long time since we saw you around here! Is "he's" really acceptable for "he has"?
I haven't been solving The Hindu regularly, therefore the absence. You used to mark a COD earlier, didn't you? Why none in this post?
ReplyDeleteIs "he's" really acceptable for "he has"?
Yes it is, though "he is" is the more common contraction. Have a look at: The Significance of 's in Cryptic Clues.
Shuchi,
ReplyDeleteHave not been marking a COD of late, I mark something only when I really like clue.
Came in late just to see the activity, not really meaning to comment. Didn't enjoy it much, but it was a mixed bag -- some good and others fair to middling.
ReplyDelete'He's' for 'he has' is acceptable I think. We use it regularly in sentence construction, eg 'He's been on a holiday'
