Another fitness crossword from Sankalak:))
ReplyDeleteMissed you at the Chennai meet,Suresh.
ReplyDeleteAnother smooth flowing enjoyable typical Sankalak CW. Loved 6D & 10D.
I missed you and everybody else too.
DeleteI believe the Roman numeral for 49 is XLIX.
ReplyDeleteCrossword setters do use IC for 99 but it is considered inexact.
We had a discussion on 49 and 99 some time ago if I remember right
DeleteReally?
DeleteIC for 99 has been used by Gridman once or twice. (He may have got wiser now!) Its use was inaccurate, but you can't use XCIX instead!
IC for 99 is indeed recorded in a crossword dictionary but crossword editors disallow its usage, whatever authority you try to cite.
IC for 99 I have definitely seen used in some lesser-known non-mainstream UK newspaper crosswords bit not IL for 49. Have you?
We did have a discussion and the setter was you know who. The discussion was also on similar lines.
DeleteIt is wrong as per the roman numeral technical spec, but it isn't if you look at it along the lines of IX (nine) is one less than X (ten) - so why not IL or IC.
Deletehttp://www.crosswordunclued.com/2010/06/roman-numerals.html
I agree with veer when he says IL for 49 and IC for 99 can be taken as a bit of cryptic crossword license.

ReplyDelete[Y]ou can't use XCIX
You can, standing upside down with determination. ;-)
This timeline in the comments is a pain. I've tried all I can but I can't get it back to IST!!
ReplyDeleteCol,
DeleteI've sent you the steps to change the time zone by email. Not sure if you've already tried it.
Please let me know either ways. There should be a way out.
Regards,
David
The time zone setting in the blog is IST, time of publication shows up correctly. It is only the time stamp with each comment which is showing a different time.
DeleteWhen I check the comments after going to 'Comments' under 'Design' each comment is showing the right time over there!!
The comments timeline is 13 1/2 hours behind, West Coast US time?
ReplyDeleteYes, it is West coast U.S.time, 4 hours behind East coast time.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for the clarification on Roman numerals. Logically,I was accepting IL as 49 & IC as 99. maybe, as Bhavan says, let us call it the cryptic part.
ReplyDeleteHi...been a regular follower of this blog, but never got to comment! Jumping on one! Isn't a pore in the leaf called 'stomata'?
ReplyDeleteAppu,
DeleteStomata is plural of Stoma. See the link over the word Stoma in the main post
Thank you for the clarification! I missed the link :)
DeleteAppu: Plural of stoma is stomata.
ReplyDelete17d reminds me of the discussion we had on Saturday w.r.t 'a French' translating to 'un'
ReplyDeleteChecked the Blogger Help forum. The incorrect Time stamp with comments, non-availability of 'Delete' and 'Quick edit' buttons appear to be bugs in their system. Hope it gets sorted out soon
