Think of the devil. Just the other day when I met Gridman I commented on Scintillators absence!!!

4A Eh, What? Not sure
Thanks Kishore, and here I was searching for Raman's GF!!
DeleteYou might want to (carbon)date her when you locate her
DeleteAny osculation would involve the-puck(er) effect
DeleteMy annos for 4a and 28a are mere hypothesis. The intended anno might be different.
DeleteCOO - CO2 is the heavy gas
DeleteRenga, Sandy beat you by a whisker
DeleteLiked these two specially:
ReplyDelete3 An octave in 7G’s sequel? (6) EIGHTH [CD]
After 7G comes 8H or EIGHTH
18 It makes a grand ten (4,4) CUBE ROOT [CD]
A cube root makes 1000 (a grand) into 10
28A He makes barrels carrying heavy gas through (6){COO}{PER}
ReplyDeleteCOO: CO2 - heavy gas
Bingo !
DeleteNice and tricky physics Quiz from Scintillator
ReplyDelete19 Get inside married individual with throbbing desire (7) IMPULSE {I}{M}{PULSE} Unable to get the anno
24 Girls' heart taken over by a male effect? (5) RAMAN
Is this correct grammatically? Girls' heart or hearts?
28 He makes barrels carrying heavy gas through (6) COOPER.
Could have had a 'say'/ 'perhaps' or QM at the end as COO is not same as CO2
Sample Buzzers' clue:
8 Gas cooker split in half? (6,7) CARBON DIOXIDE
(COO) -KER= C + OO = Carbon + Dioxide.
As 24 A is correctly denoted with a QM.
DeleteThe good 'bad man' of hindi movies is no more. RIP 'Sherkhan'.
ReplyDeletePran jaaye par vachan na jaaye. RIP, the most heroic villain of our times.
DeleteWell said "Barkhurdar".
DeleteThere was real Pran in his dialogue delivery and body language. May he rest in peace.
DeleteRaghunath wrote elsewhere: "12 Indicating love in depressing circumstances (8) DEN(O)TING Is denting: depressing?"
ReplyDeleteAs that forum is limited in responses, here's my take:
A dent is a depression.
But 'denting' does not mean 'depressing or causing someone to be depressed". It means "making a hollow in".
Of course, we may dent someone's pride by some humiliating remark.
Could it do with a QM or say 'say'/ 'perhaps' at the end?
DeleteYou might want to comment on the points referred above at 9.00 as well on 6 D anno (Not clear to me) and 26 D scope = Level?
ReplyDelete6 A vignette starts to dwell on about chips and electronic equipment (8) AVIONICS
ReplyDeleteI had parsed it this way:
A - A
VIgnette starts - VI
to dwell on
about - ON
chips - ICS (Integrated Circuits or ICs)
Defn: electronic equipment {A}{VI}{ON}{ICS}
I too had taken it this way
DeleteAm floored by Scintillator ! A tough puzzle to tackle. Hope he would lower the bar by a few notches in his next offering !
ReplyDeleteJust a request from an amateur solver.
Really loved the theme. Though it took time and I missed a few annos in the end, was a pleasure to solve.
ReplyDeleteHi all! Some clarifications:
ReplyDelete4A: "that which"= WHAT, as in 'Bell invented in 1874 (what/that which) we now know as the telephone.'
The anno is GIG + WATT (~WHAT) 'packing' A = GIGAWATT
28A: Could have had a 'say'/ 'perhaps' or QM at the end as COO is not same as CO2
Not sure I agree with this. 'Say' or 'perhaps' or QM have a role which is to indicate Def-by-example or anything unusual in the clues, and NOT to cover up imprecision. On the question of whether COO is the same as CO2, it is on the side of being acceptable to me, just as one=I and zero=O are. I do not think we should go into bonds, bond lengths and bond angles in a bid to be precise! Moreover, given the number of possibilities for 'gas', I thought it would be good to have the qualifier, 'heavy'.
19 Get inside married individual with throbbing desire (7)
Intended anno: individual=I, throbbing=PULSE, married=M. To see the wordplay, the solver must imagine a separator (a comma, for example) exists between married and individual.
24D: I give up on this. For the surface, this should have been 'Girls' hearts', but the wordplay wouldn't work. The clue needs a rework altogether.
Also re 12A, 'depress' as a verb does seem to have the same meaning as 'dent' - except that it is more commonly used to mean 'deject' or 'dishearten'.
