    1. As the Colonel has annotated:
      Chess piece=rook,
      queen getting sacrificed for a bishop= R(egina) going out for a B(ishop)

      Hence, (-r+B)OOK

13D - What is the role of 'purpose' in the clue?

    Serving no purpose!

  5. A new year puzzle (pinched from my friend Anand)

Use two 4s to get eight, without using +,-,/ or *

    1. If you take one 4 and juxtapose a mirror reflection (tip of stem to tip of stem) you get an 8 that is slanted.

    2. That's a perfectly correct graphic solution. Kudos, CV.

Now for the arithmetical solution ...

    4. That took me back to my childhood days when I used to walk up and down my fathers back as a massage for his back while reciting my tables

      Two ones are two
      Two twos are four
      Two threes are six
Two fours are eight Is that your solution?

    5. Good try, but that is multiplication. Try operators not listed ...

    6. I am crawling around on all (my) fours to get that magic figure EIGHT ! Scratching my head vigorously is also not helping me !! Is Col Sir's reply OK ?

    9. Much better, using an unbarred operator, but there is an implied * after the first 4

  11. After reading ND's 12.15 post, I am happy I managed to fill in so many words even though I knew none of the info listed by him. Now it looks to be a jargonist CW,if I may say so- at least to appreciate it fully. True, we learn so many things every day thro' CW's if (and a big if) we only take the trouble.

    3. I am not sure that is right. 4 to the power of 4 is 256, Sqrt of this is 16. Sqrt it a second time you get 4.

    4. You do that two more times you will get sqrt2

Nice anagrams from Richard ! I couldn't get them !!

    3. Thanks Balu. Kishore is right since I missed out the letter 'h' at the end of Prashanth's name.

    4. Prashanth @ 2:59 meant to say 'HAPPY NEW YEAR* to everybody' but seems to have missed a 'p'.

    5. Exactly what I said at 545pm

    6. Your anagram did have two Hs, but your fib did not ;-)

    7. Agreed, boss. I typed T instead of H at the end. I rest my case.

    8. OMG ! What a smooth wordplay for an anagram clue by Prashanth, but for that missing 'p' ! He certainly seems to be one upcoming "Anagram Wizard" !

Of all the bloggers here, only Kishore and Richard could crack that "Happy New Year" clue of Prashanth ! (I believe)

  16. Kishore, I rejected all possibilities involving raising to a power since it implicitly involves multiplication. :(

    1. As does factorial... And what else is multiplication but repeated addition, just like the exponential is repeated multiplication. However, I think both expo and facto are considered distinct operators just like addi and multi are.

Strange, that here too, like the real world where we can think of three dimensions, we cannot visualise a fourth operator in this series: addition, multiplication, expo

    2. Spl thanks to Navneeth for bringing that up, so that I could elaborate!

      Delete
    3. That is true, but in fact the entire number system can be built up using the basic elements of 0, 1, two operations + and *, and a few definitions as to what one is allowed to do with them. And that's why I was thinking your question may be a word puzzle of some sort. :)
