DeleteChess piece=rook,
queen getting sacrificed for a bishop= R(egina) going out for a B(ishop)
Hence, (-r+B)OOK
Once again wishing everyone a happy New Year.
ReplyDelete13D - What is the role of 'purpose' in the clue?
Serving no purpose!
20A - Answer could be VINE. Now someone think of the fish to be thrown out.
ReplyDeleteVINEgar
DeleteThanks Kishore,
DeleteDidn't know that meaning of Vinegar.
You are jaan-e-jigar...
DeleteOr even labzon ka jadugar...
DeleteRichard, wrt to 8d, enkle Tulu barpujji
ReplyDeleteif I have got it right !
A new year puzzle (pinched from my friend Anand)
ReplyDeleteUse two 4s to get eight, without using +,-,/ or *
If you take one 4 and juxtapose a mirror reflection (tip of stem to tip of stem) you get an 8 that is slanted.
DeleteThat's a perfectly correct graphic solution. Kudos, CV.
DeleteNow for the arithmetical solution ...
Why not "4 plus 4"
DeleteOr 4 and 4
DeleteI am sure you know why not
DeleteThat took me back to my childhood days when I used to walk up and down my fathers back as a massage for his back while reciting my tables
DeleteTwo ones are two
Two twos are four
Two threes are six
Two fours are eight Is that your solution?
Good try, but that is multiplication. Try operators not listed ...
DeleteI am crawling around on all (my) fours to get that magic figure EIGHT ! Scratching my head vigorously is also not helping me !! Is Col Sir's reply OK ?
Delete...seems Col Sir's reply too is not okayed by Kishore ! :)
DeleteTough New Year puzzles : One by Neyartha and the other by Kishore ! :)
Delete4√4 = 8
DeleteMuch better, using an unbarred operator, but there is an implied * after the first 4
Delete25D BOOK. Remember the definition given for this by Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots.

Wishing everyone here a Happy New Year
ReplyDeleteA very Happy and Cryptic New Year to everybody
ReplyDeleteA very Happy New Year to all and a big Thank You to all wishers.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading ND's 12.15 post, I am happy I managed to fill in so many words even though I knew none of the info listed by him. Now it looks to be a jargonist CW,if I may say so- at least to appreciate it fully. True, we learn so many things every day thro' CW's if (and a big if) we only take the trouble.
ReplyDeletePay Any Where to everybody!
ReplyDeletePrashanth, your id seems to be compromised!
DeleteOH GOD! ANOTHER SPAN!*
ReplyDeleteClue: 4, 3, 9
DeleteLooks like this blog is producing more and more NAZI MAD-RAG WARS*
(7,7)
(Please pardon me. Because of an error, I have deleted three earlier posts and put them together.
Span or spam?
DeleteMy 4:25 is in response to Prashanth. I am confident it was a genuince post from him. It was a teaser and I have responded to it in equal spirit. :-)
DeleteI thought so too, at first, but found he was short a P
DeleteContinuing thread on the math puzzle:
ReplyDeletesqrt(sqrt(sqrt(sqrt(4^4!))))
Sorry that it takes a lot of sqrting. Senior citizen aspirants, note please !
DeleteIt's quite tough to remain foursquare against your cerebral torpedoes!
DeleteI am not sure that is right. 4 to the power of 4 is 256, Sqrt of this is 16. Sqrt it a second time you get 4.
DeleteYou do that two more times you will get sqrt2
DeleteOops! I missed the factorial bit. Good one
DeleteI have no head for figures ! ;-)
DeleteBut you are still prominent here, not a mere figurehead. ;-)
DeleteTo reach that level, I'll have to pull up my socks ! :)
DeleteFurther to my posts of 4:25 and 4:39 -
ReplyDeleteOH GOD! ANOTHER SPAN !* (G..D O.E P......T!)
Looks like this blog is producing more and more NAZI MAD-RAG WARS*
(A...... W...... 7,7)
Good one Prashanth
DeleteAnagram wizards
But his first one was iffy!
Frankly speaking, I just don't get what he meant in his post @ 2:57 !
DeleteNice anagrams from Richard ! I couldn't get them !!
Thanks Balu. Kishore is right since I missed out the letter 'h' at the end of Prashanth's name.
DeletePrashanth @ 2:59 meant to say 'HAPPY NEW YEAR* to everybody' but seems to have missed a 'p'.
DeleteExactly what I said at 545pm
DeleteYour anagram did have two Hs, but your fib did not ;-)
DeleteAgreed, boss. I typed T instead of H at the end. I rest my case.
DeleteOMG ! What a smooth wordplay for an anagram clue by Prashanth, but for that missing 'p' ! He certainly seems to be one upcoming "Anagram Wizard" !
DeleteOf all the bloggers here, only Kishore and Richard could crack that "Happy New Year" clue of Prashanth ! (I believe)
Kishore, I rejected all possibilities involving raising to a power since it implicitly involves multiplication. :(
ReplyDeleteAs does factorial... And what else is multiplication but repeated addition, just like the exponential is repeated multiplication. However, I think both expo and facto are considered distinct operators just like addi and multi are.
DeleteStrange, that here too, like the real world where we can think of three dimensions, we cannot visualise a fourth operator in this series: addition, multiplication, expo
Spl thanks to Navneeth for bringing that up, so that I could elaborate!
DeleteThat is true, but in fact the entire number system can be built up using the basic elements of 0, 1, two operations + and *, and a few definitions as to what one is allowed to do with them. And that's why I was thinking your question may be a word puzzle of some sort. :)
DeleteDrawing the Col.'s attention to the 723pm post from Navneeth yesterday. We can start using the word "themed" in the tagging
ReplyDeleteDone 'Themed' added as a label
