To which, Mrs Shaw reportedly showed him the dictionary to validate the address. Shawm: an old fashioned woodwind instrument. Thus, justifying the use of the word to describe her husband.

Happy Birthday CV :)
ReplyDeleteCV, many happy returns of the today. Your contribution in popularizing crosswords is immense. Keep it going for many years to come.
ReplyDeleteSomeone could have thought of setting a crossword in honour of this Maha-Rishi of crosswords for this part of the world.
Correction: returns of the day..
DeleteI had thought that you put him in a time warp. Like that movie 12:01 pm
DeleteMany Happy Returns of The Day, CV Sir !
ReplyDeleteMany Happy Returns of the Day. GM!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kishore, Sandhya, Richard, MB. Renga and also Venkatesh (in yesterday's blog).
ReplyDeleteI accept all these greetings and also from other friends who may be thinking of wishing me. I am touched by your friendship and regards to me.
My only request is please avoid peppering this Comment section with messages greeting me.
Let's discuss the crossword.
Excellent portrait Kishore
ReplyDeleteYes, there is some resemblance.
DeleteBut to be honest -
My head of hair is not that thick. Nor is it so completely peppered! (I realise that I am using this word for the second time this morning!)
Also, my eyebrows do have some whites but they are not so thick nor so white.
Kishore has left out the age spots! So fair and lovely of him!
Putting the matter in a different complexion...
DeleteLike the literary 'humbug', I used bits of several photos for ref. and hence have a mix. Partly mental impressions...
DeleteMaybe I should have put in some more work on it
Also, noting the limitations of MS Paint, I am moving to pencil and paper for the future portraits.
Deleteused bits of several photos for ref.
DeleteI was reminded of Bollywood potboilers lifting bits and pieces from different movies, and blaming it on 'inspiraton' ( a euphemism for plagiarism).
Didn't mean anything against your effort, Kishore. Just 'simply like that only'.
Kishore's graphic is near-authentic. But there is a serious look on the face...
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, CV sir!
ReplyDelete23 A
State should tend to assert, not asserts, right?
Thanks for your greetings.
Delete8D :Hardship to be highlighted for definition please. :)
ReplyDeleteDone. Thanks, MB
Delete12A and 18A also need some attention for definitions please ! :)
Delete-do-
Delete8D : My first take on this clue was : VIGOUR (-R+VIGOUR), taking 'energy' as definition !
ReplyDeleteThanks, KKK, for an entertaining puzzle ! Missed out on 'assets' and 'veterans'
Happy b'day CV Sir !
ReplyDeleteThanks, LV, for your greetings.
DeleteHBD CV sir
ReplyDelete11A his favourite town?
TKS for your greetings, Ajeesh.
DeleteAs the TN town Erode has a pucca English word with the same spelling, it has come very handy in crossword setting.
Whether a favourite or not, the town is known to me because I hail from CBE. Also, I have visited/stayed in many villages around Erode.
In these parts there are large numbers of the Kannada Madhwa community to which I belong.
Nice one. Was expecting a toughie from triple K. Was thrown off for a bit with the incorrect enumeration and in 26A and the part of speech in 23A
ReplyDeleteKKK- - Today's crossie made me think it was from Gridman. fairly easy one.
ReplyDeleteCV aka GRIDMAN aka RISHI ( isin't it CV RISHIKESH ? Here's wishing you many happy returns of the day. May you continue to beguile with your compilations of crosswords without crossing swords or words with any one ! Did you see my comments on Orkut of mine yesterday?
Happy Birthday & many happy returns of the day and more importantly many more CW's to be set! I can't believe 1 year has rolled by since we celebrated your 70th Birthday. May God bless you with long life so that you keep on encouraging and promoting many new setters.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Raju and Padmanabhan.
DeleteCV: Deepak has clarified on Orkut and now I understand how it operates. Thanks Deepak.
ReplyDeleteWhat about my other query on Hindu's improvement?
As solvers, are we not a loyal lot of readers and hence they should apply their minds to our cries? How about writing to the Readers Editor, who seeks always tips on improvement?
Happy birthday, CV Sir! Many happy returns of the day. Wishing you good health and many years of crossword setting.
ReplyDeleteVery modest of you to ask us to refrain from sending you greetings, and discus the cw, instead - the truth is you are far too popular for your birthday to be ignored!!
Good one from KKK. Thanks.
Thank you, Rita Mathur.
DeleteNice puzzle.First I thought I may not be able to finish. But thanks to well laid out clues I could complete.Very happy.
ReplyDeleteSeek your blessings, CV Sir.
ReplyDeleteRam, my best wishes will be with you, now and forever. Thanks for your greetings.
Delete28A: The caring is a noun, and considerate is an adjective. Is it acceptable?
ReplyDeleteCaring can also be an adj. as in a caring person.
ReplyDeleteNice one from kkk. Tripoli also must be high in popularity rankings.
ReplyDeleteTry telling 7d to TRS & Telengana leaders!
Happy birthday CV!
THanks, Raghunath.
DeleteSorry Kishore. Did not notice yr toon on 7 d.
ReplyDeleteHi CV Sir, Many happy returns of the day to you.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shuchi.
ReplyDelete22 Musician not half boisterous (6) OBOIST (O BOIST)
ReplyDeleteHow is Not = O? Is "Not boist" = No Boist = O BOIST?
Maybe a homophone ind with 'not' might have been better?
Not = nought?
Delete= zero = letter O? Just making a guess.
DeleteYes Richard, Not ~ nought. And Zero = letter O, but where's the zero from w/o the homophone ind?
DeleteThere is a problem here for sure. If it was nothing no problem. Musician nothing boisterous by half.
DeleteI guess some part of the clue is missing.
