    2. In the literal sense or in the sense of 'Sham'? The latter seems more popular.

  4. Happy Pongal/ makara Sankaranthi to all on this auspicious harvest festival. A big 'Thank you' to all those who wished and to Scintillator on his nice timely CW.

  5. Scintillator has rightly defined Pongal in 22d as "Extended Festival" as it spreads over a few days with Bhogi, Thai, Mattu and Kaanu nomenclatures. Devotees top themselves up with Venn and Sakkare pongal.

    1. Should it be 'began' in the clue?

    2. Then solution MUNG BEAN would be wrong !

    1. Something to do with LIMITATION (moderation))?

    2. 17 Sham cop not part of international moderation (9) IMITATION

      International = I
moderation = MITIGATION - IG (cop)

Kishore, there is a clue acrostic too as part of the pongal wishes.

    3. I did not notice that, Bhavan. I am not sure how to highlight it.

    4. My uncertainty was due to the fact that first letters of several clues have already been highlighted as being part of defn or anno

    5. A scintillating effort, indeed.kudos to the setter.

  8. I tried deletion of 'SI' (for cop) from some word for moderation, but could not quite make it and gave up (at least for now) since sham was the obvious defn. and fitted the crossings.

  20. Off-track:

Did anyone here celebrate his / her birthday on 12/12, the day before yesterday? I missed asking this question that day.

    Or anyone's wedding anniversary?

A close friend of mine was married on that day. He keeps saying, Baarah baarah ko hamara baarah baj gaya....

  21. Never mind, Richard, that barah-barah was last month! I still enjoyed your friend's comment!

    1. Sorry, friends, for the horrible mix-up! Glad that Rita enjoyed the joke.

It was no hangover effect in any case. Have been going through a very bad spell of sore throat for a few days...
