    3. I think Col's anno is correct. There is no double duty. It is a charade AYE = yes and AYE = indeed

  4. 13A loony = mad, lasses = girls
    Anagram ---> madrigals

    1. Becomes an indirect anagram and also one more 'a' is unaccounted;
      IMO it is (MAD)(RI)(GALS); loony = MAD, RI from regent and GALS from lasses

    2. A regent doesn't sign RI. Its interrex. Ruler could mean both regent and RI. As titles they are not equal. I could be corrected if any regent signed RI.

  5. Ummer's boss never accepted EXCUSES.
    Quite NATURAL as they were PUMPING in money like MAD. He wanted one part of the island to OFTEN host a burlesque show.

    Ummer went to New Orleans and other places to have a quick GLANCE at the various ACTS and scout for APPEALING dancers. He had to take that EXTRA effort.
    In one dance hall he GASPED as he LAID EYES ON the dancer. Had he seen here before?

    IT WAS THE BEGUM!!

    What happened next?

  7. 6D- while 'in' fills the bill for the required anagram fodder,it does not go well with the surface.

  8. Thank you Skulduggery. I am changing my impression about you. I used to think you are an excessuvely pedantic cruciverbalist. Today's puzzle is normal and is challenging enough for oldies like me. Thanks once again.
