  3. 20A: {-P}{+L}ATENT. obvious = PATENT

    19D: BASMATI it is. It's an acrostic.

    22A: There's a typo for FUSCHIA, with that fixed the crossing letter for 19D will be OK.

  4. 11A: I'm reading this as storehouse=SH, reportedly for starters=R. Can KAMI be a type of skirt?

    17A: FUNK MUSIC.
    fail=FLUNK, student leaving = F{-l}UNK

    3D: Looks like a cryptic definition. An isthmus is used for building canals.

    23D: Shouldn't it be LAMA? Mary's follower = LAMB, sounds like LAM, suffixed with A.
    I don't see how Mary's follower is linked with BABA? [I hope this isn't a case of nursery rhyme mix-up about lambs and sheep :)]

  5. Mary's follower is a sheep bleating BA BA!!
    (in a lighter vein)

  6. We'll have to wait for tomorrow's paper to see what Neyartha meant. I thought BABA was from the lamb. Though logically LAMA is the correct answer as per the explanation given

    Yes, an Isthmus has to be disturbed to build a canal so it is a CD

    Kami search did not throw up a skirt but it is a Japanese word for spirit

  7. I was perfectly thrilled after seeing 19 Down in today's paper! I think it's one of the toppest clues in THX in recent times. Would like to know Mr/Ms Neyartha. In fact, I landed on your blog via googling the name.
