  1. 26 - Comes close and gets head of nanny to be lifted (5) - NEARS (-h+n)NEARS Not sure of anno

    Comes close=def=nears
    gets=earns
    head of nanny, ie n, to be lifted
    (+n)ear(-n)s

  2. 23 - Gives nothing following oral stumbles (6) - OFFERS {O}{FF}{ERS}

    In this one, the parsing might be:

    nothing = O
    following = ff (ff. ▶ abbreviation • folios. • following pages)
    oral stumbles = sounds of hesitation = ERs

  4. I have a doubt on 20A.
    I thought 'abase' (as in aria X abase) was lower & 'abate' to mean lesser in quantity and not strictly lower (or recede as in floods)

  7. Sir,

    Can you pls tell me how "Henry" became HAL in 31A and Quiet as P in 30A

  8. Hal (meaning: Home Ruler) is a variant of Henry. Students of literature who have studied Henry IV may be familiar with the name Hal, who was the son of Henry IV.
    Quiet as P is one of the crossword conventions, just like Model = T.

    1. P comes from pianissimo (as F comes form fortissimo) both from music, whereas T comes from Ford Model T

  10. SPAR (28D) also figures in today's HT:
    Pole in a bit of a quarrel (4)
