  1. Good morning

Had problems with a few on the southwest corner. Then gave up for want of time and decided to wait until 8-30 am.

FESTOON*, AN(ATOM)Y, EVENING, EN+GROSS, DEMUR+RAGE, LYING, RED MEAT, PILGRIM, LATER+A+L, OVER+SEE, OFF+END, ES+TEEM, ENIGMA (very good!), CAME+LEER, HANG GLIDER*, DOL*+O+MITE, EYESIGHT*, GAL+LOP, O(N)RUSH*, MEET and the like were all well constructed.

3D Desperately HOPI+ng that my guess is correct.

  5. 14 - There is wild growth as academician gathers facts on others (10) - RAINFOREST {RA}{INFO}{REST}
academician = RA (may be from Royal Academician)
We have often seen painter = RA (Royal Artist).
But, this is perhaps the first time academician has been used to clue in RA in THC.

Having got the last part REST (others), I was trying to fit in PROF when I got R from DEMURRAGE, and then guessed the answer.

    1. Trying to fit in 'DD' for academician but it did not go with the 'rest'. Demurrage came much later- never thought of it till very late, though I have paid it many times ! Always thinking of...um...'er' for hesitate.

  6. Found today's puzzle quite challenging. Hopefully Arden will finish with an easier one tomorrow : )

  7. Agree with you, Bhavan. It was a challenge. Guess you had a nice weekend break.

    @ Renga, from yesterday.

Nice to hear that you studied and worked in Mangalore.

Many of the alumni of Karnataka Regional Engineering College, now known as National Institute of Technology - Karnataka (NIT-K), have been doing well all over the world. Satya Narimetla who teaches in the US is one of them. He is a regular THCC blogger. Are you listening, Satya?

Happy to know that you also worked for Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers - a UB group outfit - where I have a few acquaintances.

As for a possible S&B meet in my home city, I am still in the process of identifying The Hindu crossword fans here. When things take a concrete shape, we can think of a meet. Will definitely let you know.

About two years ago, one of the bloggers here had suggested a meet here. I had readily offered to host it. In that case, I had also suggested that a pilgrimage package could be thought of, with visits to Dharmasthala, Kukke Subrahmanya, Kateel, Kollur, Polali, Mangaladevi and Kadri temples thrown in for good measure. That could have included a visit to St Mary's Isles near Udupi, where we find one of the fewest basalt rock formations in India and also to Manipal education city.

The distance from the members' respective places may be quite daunting, though.

Thanks for the nice things you said about our place. Good people are not restricted to one region. They are everywhere, maybe in different numbers. Depends on whether we get to see them.

    1. Richard

I remembered the offer you had made earlier.

As of now, we don't know who and how many of THCC followers are in M'lore.

Announce an S & B there and see if there are at least 10. Then a package tour too can be organised on a cost-sharing basis.

I, and maybe CGB, will try to come. I have visited M'lore and some neighbouring places (not all that you mention). I have been to Suratkal too where I stayed overnight in a college hostel there.

    2. I too will join up if not engaged otherwise

    3. Nice of you to propose the pilgrimage package. I have not heard about Polali and not gone to St. Mary's island. I have visited the rest of the places you have mentioned, but would love to go again, this time with my wife. If Col. joins, it will give me an opportunity to meet him, the one who has started this wonderful blog. Glad to know that CVji and CGB have offered to join.
I may get a chance to visit Mangalore in connection with Cavern storage for Crude oil which is coming up near Mangalore. (provided I get the offer to chair the HAZOP session). Then I'll certainly meet you.

Regarding KREC alumni, I was in first year when KV Kamath was in final year and we were in the same hostel (IV Block)and I remember having campaigned for him to become college president. Never knew that he was the same person who became CEO of ICICI and now with Infosys. (I was informed about the same, a few years ago in one of our Alumni meet at Delh) Another one was BN Bankapur who retired recently as Director (Refineries and pipeline)from IOCL. He was one year junior to me in college.

  8. Could not get Cameleer. Had Came, but couldn't fit in the rest.

  9. Another nice one from Arden. Saw came but could not conquer Cameleer without external aid.

    Today's crossword was

Skilfully built vessel filled to the brim outside.(4,7)

  10. Yes, a challenging but engaging one. Quite a few were brilliant ( eg. demurrage, enigma (!))Even anagrams were very well camouflaged. I could not get the annos for a few though I was able to get the word with or without crossings. SW corner was really a 4D.

    1. If possible try to get a second person to read through the clues before publication. It is quite possible that something overlooked by you will be seen by the other person.

  14. But, this is perhaps the first time academician has been used to clue in RA in THC.

That qualification 'perhaps' saves the situation.

THC has used this expansion for the abbr. RA before.

    It was:

25 Zealous academician gets order (5)

The clue was in THC 9813 (Gridman) pub. on April 10, 2010.

  15. Barbadkatte: Just finished your effort on line. Great !! Keep up your good work. As suggested here, wait for a call from the Hindu management to join their panel of compilers. Good to go. God bless you.

  17. Nice puzzle, Ramesh. Thanks for sharing it with us. (If you have any say of how the app is coded, I thought I'd let you know that when I type in the answers in Firefox, the 'Find as you type' feature takes over and therefore I have to click on each square to input a character. Not a problem with Chrome, however.)

As for the THC puzzle, I guess it must have been one of Bhavan's off days, as I didn't find it tough going at all, at least not for Arden. ;-) That's not to say that everything fell through immediately; it's just that I wasn't overcome with a sense of hopelessness. :D I'd solved about two-thirds on the bus during the ride back home, and almost finished it after a wash up and clearer mind. 3 and 18 were left empty, and I had a couple of wrong answers.
