Welcome Anon to the stable:
ReplyDelete22 Praised the corrupted? Perhaps not! (8) ADULATED ADULtrATED Deletion of 'tr' not clear
Actually spelling is: ADUL(TER)ATED. Maybe anon had indicated 'er' as hesitation(perhaps), overlooking 't'.
Spelling corrected
DeleteThe German word for "The" is "Der". A corruption of it further could be "Ter"
DeleteCould this new setter be a woman? Is there a woman among present THC setters? Cannot a pseudonym reflect the gender of a setter?
ReplyDeleteMy eternal question against anonymity and pseudonyms !! Look who's speaking on my behalf !!
DeletePressure on top of steel lock (6) STRESS {S}{TRESS} S for 'steel' acceptable?
ReplyDelete---
Maybe S is from 'top of steel'.
Breezy puzzle. Strange a new setter comes in the middle of a cycle. Normally it doesn't happen that way.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the new setter- starting off with a nice one.
ReplyDelete25A- I had it as 'Expedience'. Chief doctor (D) replacing initial reaping (R) with def. as suitability.
Col.,
Samosa is just for taste and not to satisfy hunger- w.r.to his opening remarks. I missed it by a whisker!
If my memory serves me right, you're clean shaven, Paddy. Would that make it a bare-faced misstatement ?
DeleteAny day I prefer a 3 course (at least 2?) meal to a snack(samosa,vadai.....) Not yet had my shave today. So really cannot call it bare- faced!
Deletegetting away on a technicality !
DeleteOur leaders show the way!
DeleteSamosas are only snacks. Not a full meal !
DeleteAs a coincidence, TH chennai edition carries an article about a would-be Orwell museum in Bihar with an unmissable bold headline. News to me that he was born in Bihar,India.
ReplyDeleteWelcome, Anon. Nice crossie
ReplyDeleteGrid on page from 1st Oct. to compensate for the absence of Orkut?
ReplyDelete21 Wise man teeming with controversy (6) STRIFE {ST}{RIFE}
ReplyDeleteWise man = ST?
saint?
ReplyDeleteI know but is it an accepted short form?
DeleteWise man = saint = st.
DeleteThis is acceptable, though it is one step removed..
In fact, 'wise man' and similar phrases are against St in Chambers XWD dictionary.
Maybe these once-removed abbreviations are used in advanced cryptic crosswords rather than regular ones in dailies.
But this kind of categorization is unnecessary.
11 Governors capture, surround a woman leader (6) NAWABS {N{A}{W}ABS}
ReplyDeleteThere is an extra S in the answer unaccounted for, as Capture = NAB.
Liked 15 a. On first reading it seemed a CD, thinking it be match or something similar.
Yes, I also noticed the missing S in the wordplay.
DeleteGuardian quick CW in DC carries this as 1A-
ReplyDeleteSmall Indian turnover ,fried & served hot- guess what?- SAMOSA!
But why turnover- no. of samosas?!
Possibly ref to an apple turnover ...
Deletea small pie made by folding a piece of pastry over on itself to enclose a sweet filling.
Samosa too involves folding on itself
Thank you Kishore. New to me.
Delete11A I have a problem with the last S since it is not clued.
ReplyDeleteSame problem as pointed out by Raghu earlier
DeleteWelcome, Anon. A nice puzzle. Enjoyed it. Thank you. :)
ReplyDeletePower cuts in Hyderabad from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Ameerpet. Total 4 Hours! Hence delayed entry into the blog. :(
ReplyDeleteO/T : 15 Wildlife sanctuary in Srinagar mom visited (5) DALMA. Solution given in 2nd round IXL 2014.
ReplyDeleteCan someone explain how DAL is linked to wildlife sanctuary in Srinagar pl?
Definition: Wildlife sanctuary
Deletein Srinagar = DAL ( Dal lake)
Mom = MA
DALMA is a wildlife sanctuary in Jharkhand
Thank you Vinayak. I feel, the surface reading is not smooth, though.
DeleteWelcome Anon - Enjoyed the crossie and scored about 90% - Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought this crossword was by an unknown poet.
ReplyDeleteLet me explain.
Many poems in a book of story poems that my father read to me and my siblings when we were children were by Anon. I thought it was the name of a poet until my father one day told me that as the person who wrote the poem was not known, it was attributed to Anon - which is short for Anonymous.
Thus I learnt something anon and forever.
Anon. is arguably the most prolific poet, bard, author, composer and painter the world has ever seen.
DeleteThat poet passed on unsung, unheard and unknown--- but not unread?
ReplyDeleteRaghunath, Padmanabhan and Suresh: In 11A, 'capture' and 'surround' account for two NABs, or NABS.
ReplyDeleteNo, scratch that -- that doesn't work.
DeleteWelcome Anon. Hope to see much more from you.
