ReplyDeleteI had 5d as PLATE (DD)
ReplyDelete10d is advised = notified around Edward = E + retweet = RT
Thanks. Since I don't use twitter never knew that RT is retweet
DeleteEdward is normally 'ED' or just E?
DeleteRe 8d: How does one win a trophy wife/husband? Where is the competition held? Is there any entry fee? Any age restriction? Will only the unmarried qualify? What happens if there is a tie between two contenders? Is a shelf needed to display the trophy?
ReplyDeleteA famous one was held on TV by Rakhee Sawant wasn't it?
DeleteAre Santiago and Flynn famous Baseball players?
ReplyDeleteFlynn was a fencer/ actor? (Eroll Flynn)
ReplyDeleteIt is Errol Flynn.
DeleteI don't think Santiago had anything to do with baseball. It is just a capital city and 'Capital' is part of the clue and must be the def.
DeletePaddy,
DeleteErrol Flynn is an actor
Famous for his role as a fencer-
Delete"Working throughout his career with a cross-section of Hollywood's best fight arrangers, Flynn became noted for his fast-paced sword fights as seen in The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Sea Hawk and Captain Blood."
Came to know about him for these when I was in school.
A few delightful (dry surroundings= TT), a few iffy and a few entered but could not parse. A good enjoyable mixture, difficulty being Baseball not popular over here. (eg) Pitcher's location=Mound
ReplyDelete'Ell' as annexe was new to me. I had to look up after seeing Bhavan's comment.
ReplyDeleteStarted off seeming like a gentle ride, but soon ran into heavy weather - it took a some persistence to steer through it and land safely! Thank you, Neyartha (and DG, for the blog).
ReplyDeleteNot clear about two things:
- "not challenging" as definition for UNGLAMOROUS - never come across this usage before
- "mound" in the clue for DIAMOND - it was clear enough from the pitcher's location part and the crosses, but why "mound"?
Sigh - sorry for the completely confusing last bit. I meant to write, "why 'store' in the clue for "MOUND"? It was clear enough from the pitcher's location part, but why 'store'?"
DeleteMound/stack/store
DeletePerhaps N felt that 'Pitcher's location' seemed a bit vague or too GK-ish/E-typr-ish for a cryptic puzzle. The way it is now, the solver would take a few extra seconds to evaluate some other possibilities before arriving at the answer.
DeleteRe.Mound, pl. see the link referred in the blog. I was also equally stumped (no stumping in Baseball) until I read here.
ReplyDeletePlease see my clarification above - sorry for the confusion!
DeletePaper-wallah didn't turn up today. THC AppSpot solver to the rescue! The interface looks much better that what I remember of it from the early days. (Or maybe it hasn't changed at all and I was just happy to be able to solve the crossie today. Not sure about that.)
ReplyDeleteAs for the crossword itself, surprisingly succinct clues for a Neyartha grid. Some nice surfaces as well.
22D: Intrusive 'of'. I was trying to somehow fit DOE in.
7D: NOR ~ gnaw? Really?
