    1. Yes, thanks! Minor mod: 22d was intended to be a composite anagram. (YAMMERS OR)* = SORRY AM ME, with "goes off" being the anagrind. But your anno worjs too, with "goes" for deletion and "off" as the anagrind :-) (both would be awkward prefix operators though, in that anno, imo).

  24. 11 AC : OBS (obstetricians) + CURE (heal) = OBSCURE (minor)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This clue is a good example of how a clue, if written with some dictionary/thesaurus work, becomes less easy.
For OBSCURE I might offer, straight off the bat,
      Old boy's remedy is unknown (7) OB's + CURE.
The clue does make sense - The formula of a remedy of an old man in a family possessing home remedies may be only in his possession and may remain unknown to others.
OTOH, the clue in this crossword eschews the trite 'old boy', uses a medical abbr. - which in itself is not, well, obscure. But the def for OBSCURE is not a synonym that comes to mind readily. And in the surface it is a noun but as def for the word required it is an adj. See how the bar is raised.

7DN DEUCE ~doos and as per spooner is PSEUD

These two I guess are not answered yet.

    1. Please explain the spoonerism. As far as I know it occurs in phrases where the initial sounds of two words are transposed. (I have now checked it in Collins.)Does it occur in a single word? What is the sound change in deuce/pseudo?

    2. https://www.theguardian.com/crosswords/crossword-blog/2012/mar/01/cryptic-crosswords-beginners-spoonerisms
Examples of Spoonerisms in the above story confirm my position.
However, the following from Shuchi's article differs:
Spoonerism clues use play on words in which the initial sounds or syllables of words are switched (emphasis mine).
What is the authority for the latter part about syllables?

      Delete
    3. Vasi Sir,
It is not pseudo. Just pseud [single word] which means fraud.
This is what I tried to explain.
If it is not correct, let someone correct it.

      Delete
    4. Interesting! I wasn't aware that Spoonerisms exclude syllable swapping within a single word. Will keep in mind for the future, thanks.

The intent was: deuce (pronounced as /djuːs/) is a syllable-sound-swapped version of pseud (pronounced as /sjuːd/). I think my pronunciation keys may get mangled in the blog here, but they can be seen and heard in Google by searching for define:deuce and define:pseud.

Re 27 Start to write about first love (4)
Is "first love" ok to indicate O goes ahead of pen? Should it be "love first" (which of course mars the surface".
Or could it be "first love" or "love first" depending upon how the surface goes?

    1. The solution to this clue is not OPEN. See Kolluru's solution and anno above, thanks.

    2. Also, I agree that "first love" does not really work in this alternative solution/anno ("about" is also extraneous).

  33. I understand that in UK advanced cryptics setters go beyond the dictionary meaning of Spoonerism and do use the device in single word with two syllables
Here, in 7a the word does not even have two syllables.
Some other clue needs to be written, I think.
