Dr RKE's TalePiece

Colored STREAMERs welcome guests to ‘TANGO’, the famed continental restaurant in a 5-star hotel in Mumbai. (For reasons of anonymity, the name of the hotel is withheld but suffice it to say that it faces SEAWARD). ‘Tango’ is famed for its CHEESE platter. Their CAMEMBERT and GRUYERE are sourced directly from France and Switzerland, air-lifted in ICE boxes and served fresh to connoisseurs. Apart from the chef’s WORKHORSE cheeses (such as Mozzarella and Parmesan), there are also cheeses with WEIRD names as Casu Marzu (which goes well with BOLOGNA), Milbenkase, Shepherd’s Hope or Sinking Bishop. The fancier the name, the higher the price and only men with the MOOLA can afford them. Each batch of cheese is made to UNDERGO rigorous quality testing ERE being served.

So, it is to the UTTER surprise of the restaurant manager, Ms. Richa Bhatia, that there is a TWEET this morning from a disgruntled customer about how she developed ENTERITIS after eating the cheese from this hotel yesterday. The profile picture of the tweeter makes Richa recall the customer instantaneously as the woman had bright HENNAed hair. Richa is surprised that this woman’s Twitter handle already has 1.5 K followers.

Richa PROCEEDS to check the LEDGER in the pantry and finds several IRREGULARities in their quality check entries. She is reminded of the phrase “having more holes than Swiss cheese”! She brings it to the attention of the Chief Manager of the hotel. She is dismayed to find that the management is more intent to HUSH UP the affair than to find out what is wrong, as is OFTEN the case with the higher-ups. She has CAST IRON proof of the misdeeds of the pantry head but the management tells her to not step out of her CREASE. Being conscientious, Richa resigns in a huff and is now planning to take an E-LEARNING course on  “how to have your cheesecake and eat it too”.

  1. I think 14A should be {BOL}{O}{G}{N}{A} with O coming from Over

    ReplyDelete
  2. Yes Col. I was wondering about the O since 'Bolo' in Hindi is 'Speak' and not speech.

    ReplyDelete
  3. A doubt about 23A- You don't say cheese TO the shooter, he says it to the people who get shot.

    ReplyDelete
  4. That was the last to fall, by the way.

  5. Thank you Dr. RKE. Enjoyed the Cheesy story, but again very practical.

  6. I can't exactly say where to put my finger, but if the setter's name is not given (as it happens in TH these days) each one of us will say Gridman- so typical.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Thank you, again,Ramesh for the meticulous blogging. The Ref. list is indeed very long.

  8. Gridman never fails to please me with his 15 letter phrases or idioms Thank you Gridman

  9. Students owing to the lockdown have to UNDERGO classes through E-LEARNING.

They will receive a TWEET about the timing of the class.

The BOXER needs to be sent to its kennel. OFTEN times the student may look WIERD in MUFTI.

But then what has attire got to do as you are taught the benefits of ACACIA Catechu for Asthma?

And on the upside teachers and schools found out a way to increase their MOOLA!!

They may even enroll a student residing in BOLOGNA!!

  10. For all of those who are missing xChequer, we will be having an xChequer special tomorrow at 10:30. It will be a barred grid so plenty of clues, the only problem being it's not compatible with Across Lite so you will have to print the grid as an interactive version will not be available

    1. Col, Will it be possible to pre publish the empty grid so that solvers can be ready to go when the CW is published

    2. The above is a good idea. Col, please try and publish the blank barred grid in a post today so solvers can print it out or prepare it on paper and keep it ready for tomorrow.

      Delete
  11. Oh no! Col. We are so used to Acrosslite . Some of us do not have a printer. So find your way to do something. Pl check with Chaitanya and send the grid to him for conversion to Acrosslite. Thanks and God bless.

    1. You may do it in excel (complicated) or draw up the squares on paper (Best)

    2. Raju,
Why don't you - or why can't you -take the word of the respected setter and publisher? AcrossLite does not - and cannot - create interactive version of barred grids.

      Delete
    3. CV. I ha e no reason to disregard the word of the setter or publisher. The purpose of the Sunday Special is to expect the usual Across lite so that all can participate. It is so convenient. We wait with bated breath. It is so disappointing to depart from the normal routine. Anyway, let's see what's coming tomorrow. I abide with what's available and if I cant access, my bad .

    4. Raju:There is a software QXW(Quint plus). You can create both barred and blocked grids. You can also upload clues to it and solve interactively.
Please refer to the CU article for how to create Barred grids with double entries in one slot:
      https://www.crosswordunclued.com/2019/04/crossword-software-to-make-puzzles-with.html?m=1
This software is available free on net. You can download the same.
Then there is this software created by Viresh Ratnakar(Exvolve). But I don't know if this is available free on net.

    5. Viresh Ratnakar's software (note it is called exolve) is a beautiful-looking, versatile software that lets you solve a crossword interactively where you could check your answers and do many things.

It basically allows you to publish a prepared grid prepared in html format. It doesn’t automatically check answers but can be customized to collect data.

It is open source and available at Github, which is a public website that software developers use to publish their software.

      You could visit here:

Filling it tomorrow will be the tough pert!

    3. Oh! You cannot copy paste the grid in Excel. You have to create the grid in Excel. Prasad creates them in coded Excel. I do it in plain Excel. I will send you the grid in Excel.

  18. Thank you , Vasant. I have already downloaded QXW and have also used it before. Sunday Specials should not be tampered with. It is our favourite. Must we have to go through any rigamarole?

    1. Raju/Paddy: I have sent you the grid in Excel. All you have to do is copy the clues from the blog and paste it in the excel and solve.

    2. "Must we have to go through any rigmarole?" Not really. To solve your favourite Setter's puzzle you have to put some effort.

    3. Sure Vasant, will give a try tomorrow!

  19. We know of Azed's barred grids. They came as 'plain' and 'titled'. The plains were somewhat easy, the words that went into the grid, I mean. But the titled ones had oh-so-hard words, rare words, maybe archaic words - all because of the tight checking involved in the grid. Our setter's regular THC grids themselves were considered 'tough' by some of us. How is it going to be tomorrow? Will we have to rack our brains while we crack the clues with not a wrack of idea of what it is? Oh, 'wrack' is a Sheakespearean word.
Our revels now are ended: these our actors
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision
The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yes, and all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a wrack behind:? (The Tempest)
Or will it be a walk in the park as we say of some puzzles?

  20. Nice grid and tale piece today. Almost completed but for the cheese and the two long ones. Barred grid sounds interesting. Waiting for it. thanks

  21. Reference CV's post at 18:13 above.
Though I have seen Viresh's Exolve program I am still not clear on how to use it to post CWs. I suppose I will have to wait till the next time when my son comes over to learn how to do it. Old age doesn't help in trying to learn new stuff :-(

    ReplyDelete
  22. Col, As long as old people are still able to do old stuff like before, it's ok.
As for formatting a CWD to be solved in Exolve, I will try and put my Mon puz in it and send it to you. and later brief you.

  24. Here's one simple way of using Exolve with blogger:

    1. Click on "+" to "Create new post"

    2. After entering a suitable title, click on the round button to the right that shows "<>" -- with this you're able to enter raw HTML code.

    3. Paste the simple HTML code from https://raw.githubusercontent.com/viresh-ratnakar/exolve/master/exolve-m-simple.html

    4. Edit just the puzzle lines and the title line to provide your puzzle. You can provide a grid with or without solution letters. Grids can use bars as well as blocks. Examples below.

    5. Preview, and publish (the interactive functionality does not work with preview).

    Grid examples:

3x3 with blocks and solution letters provided:

    ABC
    D.E
    FGH

3x3 without solution letters provided (use 0 for all cells)

    000
    .0.
    000

4x3 barred grid with solution letters (| after a letter means bar after, _ means bar under, + means bar after as well as under, spaces can be freely added to align)

    A B|C D
    E_F G H_
    I J|K L
