      I don't agree.
      As per Chambers meaning is as under

      bail or bale verb (bailed, baling; baled, bailing) (usually bail out or bale out) 1 tr & intr to remove (water) from a boat with a bucket or scoop. 2 intrans to escape from an aeroplane by jumping out.
      ETYMOLOGY: 17c: from French baille bucket.

      So bail is 'to remove water from a boat using a bucket' it is not a bucket per se. Though etymology of bail is from French Baille

    2. To empty (a boat) of water by bailing
    As Vasant has said,a variant of bail. I remembered 'bail out' of water.

      Checked up since I had the same doubt- I stopped abruptly while filling up. Both spellings are allowed.

      It's a continuation of spelling proper nouns again
