TalePiece

By Dr RKE

Amelia Jorensen (AJ) is a lovely DAMOSEL who plays the double bass in the FINNISH Philharmonic. It is AS IF Jean Sibelius composed the LARGO section of the Symphony 5 in C Major for her. Her clear white skin needs no COSMETIC or SALVE but she is never seen on stage without a FUSCHIA lipstick. Nicolas Korhonen (NK), the conductor, conscientiously avoids taking a GLANCE at that bright purple shade, for it makes his heart skip a beat and causes the baton to slip from his GESTICULATing hand. The members of the orchestra have taken an OATH not to get romantically involved lest it affects their playing. But can affairs of the heart be controlled by mere rules? There is a CANARD circulating in the troupe that AJ is so focussed on her music that she has no romance in her heart. Of course, a besotted person would never believe such a rumour.

Today, after the sell-out performance at the Royal Concert Hall at TRIPOLI, NK has decided to FOREGO the rules and pour forth his feeling for AJ. Having come up the hard way from the lower STRATUM of the society, NK is not used to the GENTEEL ways of the aristocratic AJ and is naturally apprehensive about proposing. They take a walk on the beach in the Palma Beach Resort Hotel. A dry EASTERLY wind blows, that makes his throat MUCOSA go drier, already parched by his anxiety. How he wishes he had a few FLUID OUNCES of his favourite Olvi Finnish beer to wet his whistle? He holds her hand nervously and does not LET IT GO, till she gives an ODDISH look straight into his eyes. What is the NOTION that is running through her mind?  Is she going to SCOLD him / call him a CHEAT / mistake his pure love for a mere UNCLEAN liaison? She merely says, “let us go back to the hotel and play CANASTA”. NK, the romantic fool, is overjoyed. At least she didn’t say “let us play SPILLIKINS”. For canasta is a game of joining (cards) but spillikins is a game where things (the sticks) fall apart. Dear reader, such is the symbolism of seemingly trivial things in a romance!

    1. I had the same doubt. Freedictionary lists fuschia as a colour and fuchsia for flower or colour.

I haven't checked elsewhere. Probably okay

    2. The flowering plant is fuchsia.

    3. The correct spelling is FUCHSIA, many spell it incorrectly as FUSCHIA it seems

    4. I didn't know either. Thanks for giving the correct spelling.

    5. Thanks to Col. and Sree_sree for the reply. With the correct spelling Fuchsia on hand, I struggled with canasta and oddish.

    6. FUCHSIA is the only one recognised in all dictionaries with me. It also lists reddish purple colour.

  6. What about forgo (give up) and forego (precede). I know some use forego for forgo but is it ok for a crossword clue?

  7. Same doubt here.
Thank you Dr.RKE for the wonderful Tale piece. Amazing how you are able to use so many of today's words. It is a priceless gift, for sure- not to speak of your professional achievements.

  8. Some dictionaries authorise the use of forego as an alternative for forgo. But they cannot be used interchangeably. A dance recital may forego dinner if the dance recital precedes dinner. Forgo cannot be used here. It is more comfortable to use them in the respective senses.

    1. You're correct. I should have used a homophone indicator. My mistake

    2. Chambers considers them as interchangeable though. See below:
      ===
      forego, forgo
      verb
give up, yield, surrender, sacrifice, forfeit, waive, abandon, resign, pass up, do without, go without
formal refrain from, relinquish, renounce, abstain from, eschew, abjure

    3. Example where forego was used to mean "give up"
THE GUARDIAN CRYPTIC 28293 17-11-2020 BY CRUCIBLE
Yearning to forego last tablet (7) ASPIRIN ASPIRIN[g]

    4. KKR ji, I have already agreed that forego is an authorised alternative for forgo: give up. Are they really interchangeable? See the examples you have quoted. They all justify the use of forego for forgo.
If they are really interchangeable we should be able to use forgo to mean precede. If it is so be kind enough to give examples for such use.

    5. The def is give up with synonym as forego. Why should it fit forgo?

      Delete
    6. This is not about the present grid. I was asking about the interchangeability that KKR ji has mentioned. Moreover I am not questioning. Just an academic interest to know whether they are really interchangeable.

    7. From the dictionary:
Definition of forego (Entry 1 of 2)
      transitive verb

: to go before : PRECEDE
The story of his mishap forewent him.

    8. Interchangeability is a matter of choice and elegance. (Within the meaning of give up or precede, grammatically correct)
