  44. AMIDST THE CLOUDS!

Joan, a resident of CANTON, had found the going tough, being a single parent & a SENTINEL to her two growing children.

Their holidays were always trips down SNAKING roads, with HAMPERS full of home cooked stuff. Occasionally there were CANOE rides for spotting a BUSTARD. Meeting a LION in a safari or visiting the MUSEUM in Geneva remained a pipe dream.

She and her children were so USED to meeting just their basic NEEDS that, she was overwhelmed, when her BOSS gifted her a SPIT Barbecue for her 50th birthday. As time & her youth ELAPSED, she EVADED confiding, even to her AIDE, the fact that, she had never stepped into an aeroplane.

Imagine her surprise, when, for her 60th Birthday, her children gifted her a holiday to GREECE. At the present cost of AIRFARES, she almost wanted to invent an ALIBI & ESCAPE the trip. She couldn't avoid the EERIE feeling that the Travel Agent must have EXTORTed the last penny of their savings.

FINALLY, on the day of her birthday, she FLEXed her muscles & boarded the flight. As she was ESCORTED to her seat, by the Air Hostess, a PLEASANT feeling came over her.

Twenty minutes after taking off, suddenly the lights were switched off. Before the passengers could react, strains of music REVERBerated over the speakers and the crew came marching down the aisle. The leader was carrying a big cake, complete with 60 CANDLES!

They were celebrating her Birthday!!!! The pilot came to wish her in person & bottles of Ginger ALES were opened by the other crew. After the last crumb had been polished off & last drop drunk, Joan EMBRACED each & every member of the crew.

At last, her birthday had been celebrated literally amidst clouds!
