    I agree with you that this was quite easy. A couple of later ones, due to appear six or seven weeks later, proved to be rather tough. Mainly because some references were highly parochial. Literature, history, geography, whatever, as long as they can be reasonably expected to be within the knowledge of an educated person are fine. But a suburb of a town in England - such obscure references are the undoing of overseas solvers. But we can't complain. It is in a UK paper, the setter is a Brit and the solvers are mostly in UK though now with online crossword becoming free there msut be sizable number of overseas fans as well.

  3. I think I have explained this somewhere quite recently.
    "up" means "at school or in university".
    Here, we assume U is for University and look in vain.
    But if we disabuse our mind of this and check 'up' in a dict, we will see light.
