Col Sir, My views, do correct me if iam wrong.

Isn't thermals used by gliders for gaining altitude?? Mr Manna may have used "aspiring" with the intent of implying rising.

I thought this was an excellent clue with clever word play and good surface reading

  3. 8 - Desires arrangement to dwell permanently (7) - RESIDES*

Why 'permanently'? Does reside mean a permanent settlement?

13 - Swiss federal state extends to Far East language (9) - {CANTON}ESE

    ESE =?

Agree with Maddy that THERMAL clue made good reading.

  7. Raghunath,
    Sorry for not responding,
for 8D refer Chturvasi's response at the Orkut group
And for 13A check out this link http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-ese
    because
-ese is used to form adjectives and nouns describing people of a particular city, region, or country, and the language spoken by these people.

  8. Elsewhere Sankalak has been commended for his very good / excellent clues. This aspect has not been brought out by anyone. And by the way, to the best of my knowledge, Sankalak is an Ex-serviceman. Col., you were wondering about this sometime back.

  9. Col,

So Far East language is the definition, to explain the use of ESE in:

13 - Swiss federal state extends to Far East language (9) - {CANTON}ESE

  10. 5 One who goes pelting around Canadian forests (7)TRAPPER [CD]

what is the anno for this?? the first part "one who goes pelting" => trapper is clear. But what is Canadian forests doing in the clue?? Certainly trappers are not unique to Canada, or am I missing something here??

I had posed this ques on the orkut community. Didnt get any reply. Col Sir, could you please throw some light.

  11. Maddy,
I think it is just a Cryptic Definition and no word play as such.
I also presume it is because fur trapping is most predominant in Canada, see this link
    http://www.fur.ca/index-e/fur_trade/index.asp?action=fur_trade&page=index
Other explanations if any can pnly be provided by Mr Manna
