  1. 1dn: S{-econd)H(-and), I guess

    I too had the same questions you have for the others.

  2. I think Sibyl's predecessor is SEN (from SENSIBLE)

    NEARS = (SEN+AR)*

  3. Large chap conceals one fat stomach - what is large doing here??

  4. Won't SLATE be a more apt answer for 17??

  5. Shyam,
    Large is how NJ indicates anagrams

  6. Slate is not timber. Slats are thin wooden strips used in ventilators, see the link I have provided

  7. SEN may come from SENSIBLE but how on earth did you get SENSIBLE?

  8. 20D: I find through some Google searches that in Greek mythology, Sibyl is the daughter of Neso. Maybe "NES" is an alternate spelling? Anyway, we're slightly um nearer the solution with that parsing.

  9. 2D: Hand = R (for Right), them = 'EM

  10. Sensible
    Sen is the predecessor of 'sible'
    But there's no indication that a homophone is involved.
    And as the Col says, there is absolutely no ind. for the word 'sensible'.
    Am refraining from comment, but this I could not resist as it remained unresolved by you.

  11. 5D: SOYA
    Note = SO, always = AY (archaic)
    put up => reversed

  12. 13 Giant, I see is very powerful (7) TITAN I C

    The word TITANIC comes from TITAN. What can be weaker than clueing it as TITAN + I see?!

  13. 24 Start off by learning the art to block the plan (4) (-s)KILL
    If we start picking on these clues there'll be no end to it...but one last. How is this clue to be deconstructed?

    start off = OK, deletion indicator
    by = misleading connector!
    learning the = ???
    to = OK, connector
    art = SKILL
    block = KILL
    the plan = ???

  15. @Shuchi

    I guess NJ wants us to read the clue as:

    Learning the art: SKILL

    Take the "Start off" which leaves us with KILL.

    Block the plan: KILL

    ???

  16. @Bala: The issue I'm highlighting is, these parts are not equal.

    Can you replace the LHS with RHS in any sentence?

    I am learning the art = I am skill?
    We can't go for the picnic tomorrow, let's block the plan = We can't..., let's kill?!

    See?
