  1. Hi Col, A very belated Happy New year to you and Ma'm.
I guess NJ intended 16 A - TAO<- for disciple, but am not sure it works since Tao is used in the context of a doctrine, path etc.

  3. While I guessed ANDOLAN right, I think the right Hindi word for 'campaign' is ABHIYAAN. ANDOLAN means 'movement', like in 'Quit India Movement'. I guess the Sanskrit root of ANDOLAN has got something to do with the movement of a pendulum in the clock.

  4. Notwithstanding all the errors, the least NJ could have done was to indicate that 2D was an Indian word!!

  5. @Maddy,
I could find no connection between TAO and disciple that's why I left it at that

  6. Tao is a synonym for Taoist, an adherent of Taoism - hence disciple.

3D, REMA is the rock group the compiler might be referring to. Google says there was one short-lived band by that name.

  7. 12A - Weight of the holding device (4) - LASH ?

    No, it is LAST [DD]

LAST (n) : A unit of weight equal to 4,000 pounds.
LAST (n) : Holding device shaped like a human foot that is used to fashion or repair shoes.

  8. The Rock Group is R.E.M as shown in the link, no doubt on that, the A as usual is an inconsistency from NJ

  13. If you want to see how well cryptic clues can be built (even to teach new words), try today's prize crossword from financial times. (www.ft.com/crossword)

If we have any way to influence the thinking of the newspaper editors, we should get them to post the answers with annotations - like how Deccan Herald cryptic does.

  14. While still on the term ANDOLAN, here is some information I have gathered. It may be appreciated by those who like Indian classical music.

    1. Andolan refers to a slow alternation between the notes and shrutis that are next to each other.

    2. The Andolan alankar is a gentle swing or oscillation that starts from a fixed note and touches the periphery of an adjacent note. What is special about the Andolan is, that in the course of the oscillation, it touches the microtones or shrutis that exist in between. The note that is being oscillated within an Andolan is known as andolit swar. It must be noted that these andolit swars are raga-specific and should not be applied to any raga that uses these notes.
