A new word for me. A relative of mine has installed this in his new home in Bangalore. Had not bothered to ask him for the technical term.

  2. I think 4A is SAMSARA

2D - I think the answer is ACCORDIAN and DIAN is derived by removing IN (playing) from INDIAN

  3. 4A - God’s instrument! (7) - CAUSERS ? Just a wild guess

My guess: It could be a musical instrument in the hands of a Hindu god / goddess. First I tried with Naarad's instrument TAMBURA. But it wouldn't agree with the crossings.

  4. @ Sembhayya

ACCORDION is the correct spelling, unless the setter thinks it is ACCORDIAN.

  5. @Sembhayya,

Considering this is NJ's CW then ACCORDIAN is OK but the instrument is spelt as ACCORDION and not as intended by NJ

    ReplyDelete
  6. thefreedictionary.com is redirecting accordian to accordion. But, I agree that accordion is the commonly used spelling.

  7. @Sembhaya,

SAMSARA is the eternal cycle of birth, suffering, death and rebirth, may fit in to the clue, but the least NJ could have done was to indicate it is an Indian word.

  8. I misspelt 2D as ACCORDIAN and had no problem. But of course the right spelling is ACCORDION

  10. @ Suresh

You may have hit the bull's eye. BANSURI is Lord Krishna's flute.

  11. I guess BANSURI is derived from BANS, Hindi for bamboo. Can someone confirm this?

NJ is on the right lines, for a change, with DUMBWAITER see the link provided in the main post

  13. @ Richard,

Here is your answer, taken from Wikipedia

The word bansuri originates in the Sanskrit bans [bamboo] + swar [musical note].

  15. I Know the meaning. But my OED gave Dumbwaiter as two words. Perhaps one word is also acceptable nowadays

    ReplyDelete
  16. Could someone tell me the difference, if any, between a dumb waiter and Lazy Susan?

    ReplyDelete
  17. A dumbwaiter is literally a mini lift for bringing food up, whereas a lazy susan is a circular section placed on a table which has all the food placed on it and makes it easy to paas the food around to all the people seated around the table

    ReplyDelete
  18. Freedictionary.com gives a meaning of dumbwaiter as lazy susan. I just looked it up. Wonder what Fowler would say about this

  19. The basic aim of both remains the same and that is, moving food around or up and down and saving on labour.

  20. A lot of food for thought around lunchtime !
