  1. Hi
21A TRIO is fine. TRAIN - AN(ONE)+O (head officer)=TRIO (musical group)

    Others, still undecided...

  2. Good morning folks:

    15D - It is disgusting to change the law guarding future leaders (5) - {AW{FU}L*}

The above one exactly describes some of the clues today. Could not get a few of the right-hand side bottom corner.

1A - Paired set of condiments found on the dining table (4,3,6) - SALT AND PEPPER [CD] - It was intended to be a nice clue, but can salt be called a condiment? I am not sure.

    9A - Hand over the French notice (5) - {LE}{ADS} ? - Singular-plural mix-up.

    22A - City in Czechoslovakia? (4) - OSLO [T] - Clever one, for a change.

6D - First pillage of the gangster's gold is in the group of islands (5) - {P}{AL}{AU} - A Google find for me. The sound of it (Palav) was appetizing.

18D - Hundreds hit the jackpot (5) - SCORE [DD] - 'Score' equals 20. A hundred is five-score. 'Scores' is multiples of 20 and definitely lower in value than 'hundreds'' Looks like our English was getting spoilt by solving such clues all this time, but now our arithmetic is also running the risk of getting ruined.

  4. Is today's puzzle a Pangram, excepting for 'Z'?

  5. Except for a few erroneous ones, a nice puzzle overall. Could get it done with without much trouble.

    23D was real funny.

    Really liked 10A, 19A, 21A, 22A, 33A, 34A, 5D, 6D, 11D, 12D, 15D, 23D, 26D, 30D and 31D

  6. Sorry, missed this one.

17D - He may not be the classy sort of person! (9) - UNREFINED [CD]

'Such a person may not be deemed classy' may have been more correct.

  7. 18D: SCORES cannot be the answer because it would not fit with the latter part of the clue i.e. "hit the jackpot" The clue would then have to be "Hundreds hits the jackpot" which is grammatically incorrect.

  8. 34 A - Quite a stretch getting to the answer from the clue

  9. 21 A - Group of musicians - Trio? Obscure German band.

  10. Giridhar, Trio: Band of 3 musicians. Example: Greenday.

  11. What I meant to say was there was a German band by the name Trio.

However I don't know whether this is what the setter meant.

  12. I don't think so. It's too obscure.

  13. 9 A Leads - here again the clue leads to a solution which does not match the definition

  14. 16 A , I thought was a good clue.

Deepak, Is today a record in terms of time taken (for THC, that is)?

  15. When a group of musicians or a band has only three members they are known as a 'Trio'

  16. @Giridhar,
No there have been days when I have not been able to complete a NJ CW!

    ReplyDelete
  17. @VJ,
What I meant is that 'hundreds' can only lead to 'scores'. Hit the jackpot can lead to 'score'

    ReplyDelete
  18. @ Deepak, I agree. Either way, double definition does not fit.

  19. The clue for OSLO may be clever but it has appeared before in THC, THC(Sun) [i.e., Everyman) and NIE and perhaps elsewhere too.

Great minds thinking alike are likely to produce the clue.

Many clues here have problems; some have been noticed and some not.

  20. I was just about to write on OSLO when CV Sir beat me to it.

It's an old chestnut. Many crossword guides online use it as example for the hidden clue type.

  21. 22A is clearly outdated as Czechoslovakia is long gone

  22. 32 AC: A sniper is not a freedom fighter.

A sniper is a marksman who shoots from a hidden position - that's my understanding. Here's the dictionary.com definition:

    snip·er (snī'pər)
    n.
A skilled military shooter detailed to spot and pick off enemy soldiers from a concealed place.

One who shoots at other people from a concealed place.

  23. @ ALL

Long time listener-first time caller: I was thinking, just some ramblings ....

9A: Isn't 'hand over' singular? Hows the ans 'LEADS'?

14A: I felt 'AWARE' is more befitting than 'AWAKE' for a synonym of 'CONSCIOUS'. Aint it?

29A: 'Texture' refers to type of print or the feel one gets of a fabric - I may be wrong but how does this show quality?
